Noticed the same thing here in Virginia Beach.  People were out everywhere we went.  The state park we are staying in was full of people hiking all day in the storm.  There is a 60' elevation in the park and dozens of people came for sledding down the dune.  Was most surprised to find lots of folks on the beach.  Conditions were pretty rough, but a quite a few people were out in it.

Measured 1.7" here (Chevy Chase/Bethesda area).  Nearly all of that fell during a solid couple of hours with nice dendrites and rates.  As others have said, congrats to those farther south on being able to enjoy a very impressive storm for that region!  Too bad we couldn't share in the better amounts, but that band late yesterday morning kind of saved the day here at least.
