The summer weather is nice(although the next few days will be uncomfortable), but we really do need some rain.  My garden needs to be soaked again after only a few days, but now the rain barrel is empty.  Also, the nearby creek is mostly dried up.  We need 3+ inches of rain over the next ten days just to reach average for June.  I'm hoping for a minimum of an inch through early next week.

LOT talking up the heat potential...

THE BIGGER CONCERN WILL BE THE BUILDING HEAT. WHILE HEAT ADVISORY
CRITERIA WILL LIKELY NOT BE MET...THE MAX HEAT INDEX IS EXPECTED TO
BE IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 90S FROM SATURDAY THROUGH NEXT
WEDNESDAY...WITH HEAT INDICES APPROACHING OR SLIGHTLY EXCEEDING 100F
ON SUNDAY AND TUESDAY AS ADVERTISED IN THE LATEST FORECAST GRIDS. WITH
PREVAILING SOUTHERLY WINDS AND A STRENGTHENING PRESSURE GRADIENT
EXPECTED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS...LAKE BREEZE DEVELOPMENT IS
NOT LIKELY AND THE HIGHER TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REACH THE
LAKE FRONT...INCLUDING DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. SINCE THE SPRING HAS
BEEN RELATIVELY COOL AND DRY...THE MUCH HIGHER HEAT AND
HUMIDITY...WITH DEWPOINTS WELL INTO THE 70S LIKELY THROUGH THE
PERIOD...COULD BE A SYSTEM SHOCK TO MANY PEOPLE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO
THE HEAT. ALSO...THE EFFECT OF HEAT ON THE HUMAN BODY HAS A
CUMULATIVE EFFECT. AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF NEAR ADVISORY HEAT
INDICES COULD CAUSE HEAT- RELATED HEALTH PROBLEMS MUCH LIKE A
SHORTER PERIOD OF HIGHER HEAT INDICES...AND AN EXCESSIVE HEAT
ADVISORY MAY EVENTUALLY BE REQUIRED BY EARLY NEXT WEEK EVEN IF
HEAT INDICES DO NOT QUITE REACH ADVISORY CRITERIA. THE ONE CAVEAT
THAT WILL NEED TO BE REMEMBERED THAT THERE WILL BE SOME CHANCES
FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...EVEN IF SCATTERED...WHICH IF THEY
OCCUR AT THE RIGHT TIME...THE MAX TEMPS COULD BE LOCALLY LOWER DUE
TO THICKER THAN EXPECTED CLOUD COVER OR MORE EXTENSIVE PCPN.

AS A REMINDER...FOR THE WFO CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE CWA...AN EXCESSIVE
HEAT ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN THE HEAT INDEX IS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL
TO 105F. HOWEVER...IF THE HEAT INDEX IS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO
95F FOR A PERIOD OF 4 DAYS...AN EXCESSIVE HEAT ADVISORY MAY BE
ISSUED FOR THE 4TH DAY DUE TO THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF HEAT.

While many of us in the eastern and central Lakes wait for our first 90 degree temp, Alaska has been baking this month. Valdez, a coastal city nonetheless, hit 90 earlier this week. And yes, they had a 56" snow pack on May 5th this year.

That 90 degree reading is the only 90 degree reading ever recorded there and subsequently the hottest day on record.

RECORD EVENT REPORTNATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE VALDEZ AK1055 PM AKDT MON JUN 17 2013...THREE HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS SMASHED IN ONE DAY...EXCITEMENT ABOUNDED THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTHEASTERN PRINCEWILLIAM SOUND AS UNUSUALLY HOT TEMPERATURES WERE FELT ACROSSTHE REGION. Must be that his area dries up so quickly.  He said in an earlier post that he had 8"+ of rain in both April and May, with a bit below average June, and he's already talking about it being too dry?  Seems like a weird situation.

It would take a significant dry spell through summer to bring any drought back to the area.  I'm obviously talking short-term dry.  I have a big garden with a lot of plants in the backyard, so I notice when we get into a short-term dry spell.  The 8 inches of rain in April and May replenished the ground throughout the region, which is great, but it doesn't help the garden once the heat gets turned on in June.

Pretty toasty today.  Made 90, but low humidity so it was pretty nice.

Yeah, it was warm, but low 60s dewpoint is pretty tame this time of year.  The dewpoint should jump to around 70 the next few days, but even that won't be terrible.  The crops around here are still quite small so transpiration isn't a big factor, yet.

LAF only edged out by EVV for high temp honors in Indiana today, 88 to 87. Must be the burgeoning local drought conditions.  :frostymelt:

Point and click high temp forecasts for the airport here would be torture for Hoosier. Alas, no need to worry as you can safely bump those 2-3 degrees...LAF-effect and all.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 88. South wind 6 to 9 mph.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. South southwest wind 6 to 10 mph.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. South wind around 7 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89.
Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Monday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 88.
Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89.
Tuesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 88.

Made it to 78 80° today. Really nice day within 5 miles or so of the lakeshore. Jumped to the low 80s about 6+ miles inland. Was in Milwaukee earlier and the lakefront was packed with beachgoers. Not many people in the water given the cool waters and air temp around 70° down there at the time.

Still no 90 readings in my point either - Alek.
