Nothing beats watching the Phillies on UPN 57 in the 90s when Mike Lieberthal would put his feet in buckets of cold water in between innings. The Vet was its own hell hole, but man we loved it.

I'm old enough for Ch17 during the 1970s then Prism 1980s. They would show the vet turf showing the heat coming off of it and place a big ass thermometer out there which reached 110-120F on the outfield turf.

Just hit 100 F here...

And that wasn't even "real turf", it was "astroturf"!

Some folks on my FB page were asking about thermometer siting after seeing some reports of 107 in my area while I am 92.6

I posted the below along with some guidance from the NWS.

Some have questioned if they should allow their thermometer to receive direct sunlight. Per the NWS "Radiation Shield: "Never place a thermometer in direct sunlight" unless you have a louvered radiation shield and/or a fan aspiration unit (see my station photo below) My station does receive direct sunlight but I have both the shield and fan aspiration to ensure my reported temps are not sun inflated. Per the NWS "Use a slotted "beehive" or louvered radiation shield that blocks direct and reflected sunlight while allowing air to flow freely.Surrounding Terrain: The thermometer should sit over natural vegetation, such as grass, rather than over patios, artificial turf, or bare dirt.Clearance from Obstructions: Place the sensor away from structures. The distance between your thermometer and any nearby trees, buildings, or fences should be at least four times the height of the obstruction (e.g., if a tree is 20 feet tall, the sensor should be 80 feet away). Artificial Heat Sources: Keep the sensor at least 100 feet away from paved driveways, parking lots, and large concrete surfaces. Additionally, ensure it is far from artificial heat exhausts, such as furnace vents, chimneys, and air conditioning."

I remember going to an evening Phills game on a day like this, 1999 I think. Even though the game started at 7:05, the Vet spent all day absorbing the heat and sunlight. Even after the sun had set, the stadium continued to radiate out all that heat like a cement oven for the entire game.

There was natural grass and I always thought turf and AstroTurf we're the same. Was Astroturf made from the Jetsons dog originally? Then George trademarked it?

100F

Astroturf came from the Astrodome. Those hayseeds in TX initially thought you could grow grass indoors. Big fail! And thus plastic grass was born.

Funny because I just finished reading Roger Angell's "The Summer Game" where he writes about his first visit to the Astrodome in 1966 to "witness weatherless baseball played on chemstrand grass under an acrylic-painted Lucite sky".

I remember the ball just jumping out of the park on those hot nights. Also when the astro turf buckled and ruined a pre season Eagles game.

I went to a business persons special during that magical summer of 1993 against the Cardinals....I was dripping the entire game! I have no idea how folks are sitting through this game at CBP this afternoon!!

Fake artificial grass.  That's why there was so much slipping and sliding on it when wet, often causing some nasty injuries.

And other suspected bad outcomes for some Phillies too  - https://www.fox29.com/news/investigative-report-dangerous-chemicals-pfas-veterans-stadium-turf

The Linc & CBP have the real thing!

On the weather front, I hit 99.  will see if I get to triple digits later this afternoon .

My dentist had season tickets and gave me a pair for a 4 pm mid-July 2001 Phillies/Yankees interleague game at the Vet.  His seats were literally on the 3rd row to the right of home plate.  The weather was perfect that day - warm and no humidity - truly lucked out with that.  Had to leave "early" when the game went to extra innings since it was during a weekday.

Just hit 100 IMBY.

KMQS (Chester County airport) - 3 miles to my southwest. As of 2:35pm: 96.8°F, DP 70.9°F, heat index 105°F. I’m becoming more confident that we’ll miss triple digits at this point. ETA: Down to 96.1 at 2:55pm

I was sitting in the DMV at KOP earlier. That’s when I learned that indoor swamp ass is a thing.

@ChescoWx - how long has it been now since KMQS last broke 100?
