School staff and parents are pissed that the mayor is opening schools tomorrow. Many put out a petition for people to sign.  Even some members of the NYC council sent letters to the Mayors office to tell him to close the schools.

My wife also just told me that alot of teachers called out where she works.

i worked in elizabeth for many years teaching middle school; like nyc they rarely closed schools, pointing out that places like rochester and minneapolis have school with snow, no reason we can't....they actually sent this home to parents....one thing i remember is that, none of the good kids would show up on snowy days, but every pain in the A did, because their parents didn't want them home....

Up to 56” on the season. Combined with 2 15” plus storms, staying power, and christmas that wasnt 70 degrees, this is easily an A winter. Might be a top 5.

A+

Four 6" storms (ok fine, one was 5.8" here)

Two over 1 foot

One KU

Long lasting cold

Long lasting snowpack

Final stats from N Smithtown:

2-22 9.0" snow, 0.79" LE, ratio 11.4:1

2-23 8.1" snow, 1.04" LE, ratio 7.8:1

Overall Storm Total 17.1", 1.83" LE, ratio 9.3:1

Current snow depth 18"

For those of you thinking of adding today's snowfall to the seasonal totals, don't!  The season was cancelled in December.

But if it hadn't been cancelled, the total IMBY would be up to 48.2"

Driveway cleanup is complete, a Black IPA has been drank, all is well.

It doesn't get much better for this region. It was a B winter until this storm (Feb could've been wasted) but now it's a solid A.

And in the modern era there's actually very few that come close.

44ish on the season. Definitely a classic KU with that “big dog” vibe throughout. 1/25 in my area was totally bonkers as a 10 inch event capped by major icing that persisted for weeks, my parents in Seaside had ice skating rink quality ice on the ground for 3ish weeks (had shoveled up the snow and the ice fell last, after we had to leave). Significant and long lived cold spells despite some mild periods and warmups.

Yep this is a good winter. TR had like 74 inches in 2009 but I wasn’t here then, but this is absolutely the best winter since the 2009-2015 block down here.

Kind of winter I’ve been sorely missing and we all needed to balance the scales a little.

As of 1 pm, Central Park reported 19.7" of snow. Yet, after 1 pm, there was additional measurable precipitation. Based on the additional precipitation, the final figure should probably be close to 21". We'll see what is reported tonight, as no 7 pm update was provided.

Although the Jan 25 snow is still there.  This will most likely take us into March with continuous snow cover since January.

We just finished shoveling out and it was a very different experience from the January cold-powder/sleet oxymoron storm.  Today, the bottom of the snow was melted and heavy next to the pavement, but after a little initial melting the moisture remaining after we shoveled froze pretty quickly into a skating rink.  There was no melting or icing of the bottom of the snow pack in the January storm.

FYI, the water equivalent today was very similar to the January storm; 1.9" then vs 1.83" today.

I'm good if it stays around until April 1.

What's with that? Why won't they update the Central Park tally?

That's a pretty good list for 10 years!

The last time I was in a 20”+ snowstorm at my house was probably PDII 2003. Boxing Day 2010 was close, may have been 20” in Long Beach but I think the local observer had 18”. Where I live now generally does well in the winter and gets the higher end but never jackpots in a big storm.

This!

The only 20 inchers since I've been here (since 1995) are 1/1996 (22") and 2/2013 (27").  A bunch of near misses though, including today.

Boxing day was 12" here, PDII was 19".
