No matter what happens, it's good to see the forums back alive again. This place means a lot to me and even though I disagree with folks from time to time, I enjoy riding this Rollercoaster with you all.

The worst thing for me would be these forums not being here anymore due to lack of use. So my message for the newbies and some who have been gone and just checking back in is- stay a while. Keep contributing.

On 1/18/2026, the EPO dropped way down to -3.81. That was the lowest daily EPO in January since way back on 1/26/1991, when it was -3.99. Before 1991, you had to go back to 1974 and 1963 to have an EPO<-3.81 in January.

The combo of this extreme -EPO helping to produce extremely cold Arctic highs and a strong +PNA to steer them down in our direction with the aid of a strong -AO is why there is that 1050ish Arctic high with mega-cold coming down later this week that is a key factor resulting in this weekend’s big SE winter storm threat.

It is my 4th season back in NC. Much appreciation to the SE crew! Everything is still on the table.

edit: I remember being in NC in the Walmart in 2008 when they just got tv screens that showed the weather above the check outs.  We were forecasted to get 12-16" and the screen flashed to 33 degrees and rain while I waited in line to buy my ice cream. F that

Here's my 2 cents...

Climatology speaking, there will be significant icing after Heavy Snow this weekend. The question is where does that ICE line set up and when? Even up here in southern VA, its difficult to get a pure snowstorm like this one without having some icing.

Honestly, Its hard to not get upset with the models trending north but in the overall scheme, there is absolutely nothing we can change about that.

They could trend back south tomorrow and Thursday. Its hard to say. But whether its snow or ice or both. The Carolinas and Virginia are getting this Winter Storm.

Just a matter of how much we are getting is the ?

Let's see what 0z and 6z show.

Indeed

I'm absolutely positive he's laughing his ass off at the mood swings as he reminisces about having winter storm warnings in one room and an advisory in another so no matter what any met said, it would always verify in his house and something about seeing the whites of its eyes before getting excited ^_^ :P

Going to inject some positivity around here.. couple things going for us. 1. EE rule.. 2. How many times have we seen the models around this time frame lax in density of cold air mass getting pumped down only to key back in on it, especially as NAM gets into range and we see the CAD potential?

Sure even if there’s CAD we could still always be subjected to the sneaky warm layer. But in all reality we still have way more positives than negatives current time. I-40 north bare minimum is in a great spot. Let’s see if we can get the I-85 guys and gals back in as well!

Not sure honestly. Lookout stopped posting a long time ago and I am not sure where Wow is. He’s usually here. Maybe they moved?
