An interesting Map.

In close proximity Due north, south, east and west of Central Park we see 5.3 inches to the north, 6.5 to the south, 6.9 to the east and 6.6 to the west.

NWS - "Hey Conservancy at Central Park, how much did you guys get"?

Conservancy - "We weren't paying attention but put down 2.9 inches".

NWS - "How did you guys get that total?"

Conservancy "Well we recorded 1.1 inch at 7 am when a local news station went to the park at 7:30 and measured 3 inches. Then at 1PM after the snow had ended and compressed for a few hours we recorded 2.7 inches, at 7PM, we recorded 2.7 again and then in the daily update at 1am we thought maybe it was 2.9 inches so put that down".

NWS - "Thanks for your hard work everyone, very scientific".

Something should be done and should've been done for years. Have a dedicated NWS observer there who will measure properly or take the obs someplace else. I can understand parts of the city having less because they struggled with temps for a while but that's just ludicrous how on TV there was clearly 3" with snow still coming down at a good clip and temps falling. JFK right on Jamaica Bay struggled with temps too and came in with 4.6". I showed pics of my neighborhood to a relative in FL yesterday and they were stunned about how much fell where I am vs "I heard the city only had 2". It's ridiculous.

Another good map below. I thought the NWS forecast was pretty good, comparing the final NWS snowfall forecast map from about 3 pm Saturday (time stamp says 10 pm, but that's just the one I grabbed at the time) to the actual snowfall map.

IMO, that's a pretty good forecast. It had the maximum amounts along 95 and in south/central interior NJ and eastern LI right (even if a bit under-forecast) and had lesser amounts for far SENJ right, but it was a fair amount under for areas N of 78 and especially for Sussex/Poconos/Hudson Valley; however, they at least had 2-4" amounts for those NW/N areas unlike many other forecasters who had them around 1" or so and even had the 95 corridor at only 1-3".

In the big picture, the take home message was a moderate (2-4") to perhaps significant (4-8") snowstorm for most of the Philly-NJ-NYC region and that's what we got.

May be an image of map and text that says 'Galeton Mansfield National Gridded Snowfall Analysis during 72h preceding 2025 December 15, 12:00 UTC Renovo Williamsport LockHaven Scranton Wilkes-Barre Poughkeepsia town Hartford College Bloomsburg Hazleton Sunbury Waterbury ewistown Danbury EastStroudsburg Providence Norwich Pottsville Bridgepost Stamford Allentown Harnsburg Carlis ebanon Bronx Newewyork Brentwood Queens Reading Pottstown Springs Bays Chambersburg York Lancaster New Brunswick Brooktyn LongBranch Inches of depth Trenton Hagerstown Philadelphia Frederick 36 30 Wilmington Toms River 36 30 Germantown Baltimore Vineland E Chestertown 8.0 18 12 Dover Atlantic Gity Centrevillashington 6.0 Villas Easton 2.0 Created:2025 0.00 0.00 0.10 SalisburyOcean.Pinas OceanPines Estimated Elevation feet 8203 3281 13124 1312 8203 3281'

The map looks a little low on parts of LI especially Nassau, numerous 6” reports there.

Speaking of inflated measurements, someone else in Metuchen reported 8.7" vs. my report of 6.7". There's simply no way that's right, as it's an outlier vs. all other county reports (especially when, generally, more snow fell in southern Middlesex than northern) and it's a huge outlier vs. the nearby Edison reports (6.6" and 5.6") and my report of 6.7". Even when I measured on grass, the most I saw was about 7.4" so I can't imagine how someone got 8.7" - and Metuchen is only 1 square mile, so it's not like there is some gradient across town.

...Middlesex County...
Metuchen 8.7 in 0945 AM 12/14 Public
Plainsboro Township 8.0 in 1100 AM 12/14 Public
Cranbury 7.3 in 1045 AM 12/14 Trained Spotter

I got 9+ on the grass too.  The 3 boards were all the same at 7.6.  it's cool how consistent they were with no wind...easy measurement.  There's no consistency on the lawn.

I used the top of my deck table which was in a good spot. Easy to measure like you said.

And @IrishRob17 thought i was joking when i said i keep the lawn higher for the last mow for that reason. Snow sticks to the top of the grass, i bury the ruler all the way to the frozen ground underneath, can easily inflate my totals another 2” sometimes lol.

of course on the flip side is the guys who poopoo 1-3” snowfalls saying “it wont stick on the roads we wont get that much the models are wrong”…because we measure on 42nd street apparently.

Tis true, there's nearly always more in the yard than on on board, especially early in the season. Its even better if the ground isn't frozen yet, you can get the snow ruler to dig into the mud a bit. Winning.

I do really well in early season events when I can push the ruler a few inches further into unfrozen ground.  The tall grass is just icing on the cake.
