August 2025 Discussion-OBS - cooler than normal first week but a big comeback to warmer than normal for the last 2-3 weeks

I got skunked a bit as well considering the surrounding amounts, northern Queens and Nassau had between 0.4 and 0.6 but closer to an inch just a couple miles south of me and much bigger amounts just north as well. 

With this rain I'm at 1.13" of rain for the month, so the area can use it.  I have an irrigation system, so I'm good, but many neighbors lawns and flowers are looking quite thirsty.  Seems like from Walt's map above, a decent amount of NJ South of 78 and away from the coast were in the shaft zone.  My black walnut tree seems to be dropping leaves already.  It is usually the last to leaf out and the first to drop leaves, but this is early.

This is a first for our area over such a short period of time. It makes years like 1953 even more challenging to match with 105° heat in September. Since heat getting established early peaks before we get to August and September.

This is the worst weather of the entire year, my allergies are back.  I really hate clouds+rain+wind and now it's just clouds+wind which is even worse.

Why is it taking so long for this damned pest of a hurricane to leave? They usually move at 40-50 mph up here, this one is crawling along at 15 mph.

Also, the media is all over this storm, why so much coverage for a storm that isn't even going to make landfall anywhere? Is it because the tropical season has been so quiet?

At least the beaches are all closed so people aren't allowed to do stupid things.

Chris, how come 2010 isn't on any of these lists? Or 1983 for that matter? For JFK I think 1983 and 2010 had the most even distribution of heat.

2010 was the greatest sea breeze outlier that I ever saw living in Long Beach. Much of the spring into early fall was dominated by westerly flow. So it was the warmest summer on record to this day in Long Beach and other areas especially along the coastal plain.

Most of the time anyone south of the LIE and Northern State usually get sea breezes. But this is more enhanced south of the Southern State and Sunrise Highway. So once north of the immediate South Shore the sea breeze has less cooling influence. Though it does have some effect especially by later in the day. 

1983 must have been very similar, as there was close to 100 degree heat all the way into mid September.

Maybe this kind of pattern is more normal after a big el nino ends and just before a big la nina begins?

The good thing about living where I live is the sea breeze comes in after 3 pm, so we usually peak with our high temperatures before then.  As a matter of fact, this is why I think it's weird to have a highest temperature after 4 pm since I'm just not used to it.  Even on our triple digit days the highest temperature usually happens by 2 pm.  Last June was an outlier because I recorded 106 at 4:30 pm.

We had a nice 2 week stretch with sun.  It looks like a nice 3 days Fri - Sun coming up and may see some breaks in the clouds today

LB favorites 1944 and 1983 finished 8 and 12. 

I'm not sure whether Don considered summers before 1949 in his top ten listing, or where in time his list begins, would be interesting to find out where some of my top ten (1876, 1906, 1908) finished in his list. But in general I think cool starts to June are the main determining factor in placing a given summer lower on my list, that part of summer rarely produces much of the heat content that Don's method was measuring; also, if September heat was included, none of that would affect my rankings. Even without Sep 1-3, 1953 ranked 29th.

The four worst modern summers were 2009, 2000, 1992 and 1996. 

1983 does much better if you include September, that was a scorcher of a month!!

My favorite summers would have been: 2011, 2010, 2002, 1999, 1983, 1980, 1966, 1955, 1953, 1949, 1948, 1944

Those would be my top 12.

Thanks, Don, I strongly suspect these have become more rare with time just like full length winters like 1995-96 and 2002-03 have become much more rare.

 

1953 and 1983 really jump out from this list as having the highest frequency of such months.

The peak heat in 2010 was focused in July like we typically see. The most unusual heat in 1983 was the record heatwave coming so late on September 10th-11th. Could be related to the drought which developed that summer. That may be the last time that Queens reached 100° so late in the season.

so wild, I think some places reached 100 degrees in 1983 in July, August AND September??? Can you check to see which ones did that-- I'm sure some place in Queens did as JFK hit 100 in both July and August in 1983 and 98 in September (NYC hit 99).

If I'm not mistaken the perfect recipe for good fall foliage is about average amounts of precip with persistent cooler nights in early fall correct? Hopefully we get good foliage this time around, last year sucked cause of the drought.

I disagree, we had some of the best color and lasting color too in the fall.  One of the better ones in years.
