95-96 was almost epic for Knoxville. We had one big snow and a bunch of snow-rain-snow events. 20 miles NE of Knoxville looked like Mt Leconte for a month or so. That was so close to setting records in Knoxville.

.

I was in Knoxville that winter.  KCS went to extended school days so that they didn't have to go Saturdays.  Many schools systems still have 30mins extra built into their days due to that winter.

96 was the last time i remember snow on snow and significant snow on the ground for 2 straight weeks, with snow mounds all over the parking lots around the city.  If I remember correct, we got it going by having a heavy rain change to heavy snow.  I remember everyone in college talking about how the weather guys missed another one when the heavy rain was falling..  lol

Snows a couple times a week in the Arctic Circle. When it gets below 25 degrees here it’s too dry with the GOM 450 miles away. emoji1745.png

.

The other day I was looking at the LP on one of those cutters. Literally dumping snow on one side of St Louis and raining on the other, with the LP sitting directly on top of St Louis. Here, if the LP is only 150 miles to our south, we're getting rain most of the time. There, 1 mile north of the low was heavy snow.

Only alive for 3 of those (counting the 2 96ers as one since they’re a day apart).

Knox rocked in 1996. You guys had something like 28-30 inches of snow that winter. A single event 12-15 inch snow was widespread over Knox Co, and the Anderson/Union border having close to 20 from the Feb 2nd storm.

I actually made a ton of money Feb-May that year. So much snow and ice got into gutters it caused roof and ceiling damage. I stayed working in Halls around that time. I was doing repair work for Farm Bureau Insurance.

I live in Anderson County, TN in Oak Ridge and the snow we had in Feb 1996 was incredible. One of the best I've seen in my life time and I'm 68 yrs old. With that particular storm, the mets were not predicting snow, but heavy ice. In inches. The thought of it icing that much was scary. That evening it started sleeting and 30 min later changed to all snow and stayed snow. Never had any ice thank goodness. Here in town we got about 18 inches and I have never seen snow fall that heavily, and straight down cause there was no wind. Businesses closed and people were walking instead of driving. The streets were literally snow packed and it snowed off and on for two weeks. We did a LOT of sledding! Anyway, sorry to be so long with my post, but it truly was a magical time. I even journaled it and glad I did! I just wished I'd gotten some pics!

That's the best whole of Tennessee winter storm since the 1970s. Somehow it didn't make MRX's list of memorable winter events. Of course there's a ton of missing data and questionable snow reports on the official record from that storm.

I think if my memory is correct down this neck of the woods I remember 96 not for being a blizzard, but I think down in my area it was freezing rain that switched to long duration sleet then eventually to snow. Think we may have only gotten a few inches of snow but it was over ice and packed sleet.

So true, John. It's hard to find any info on it. I went to the library and found what the local newspaper had documented, and I also found something online about it being an unusual event for Anderson Co, but that was scant. Folks talk about the blizzard of '93 but never the snowstorms of '96. The blizzard in my town was incredible because of the thundersnow and we did get several inches, but as I recall it was gone in a few days. Of course it was mid March so that's to be expected! It just doesn't have the impact for me that '96 did. I do love me some snow.

It was a severe winter storm basically across the whole forum area. Ice, sleet, snow and absolutely frigid air in its wake. Rockwood has missing data,  but 8 inches of snow was recorded and then another 1.08 QPF fell with temps in the 20s.

Lenoir City had 8 inches of snow officially recorded but also has missing data.

Athens had 4 inches of snow but over 2 inches of QPF fell with temps below freezing.

Oak Ridge got down to -13 in the wake of that winter storm in 1996. Official airport data says it happened with 12 inches of snow depth.

I don't know which year it was exactly, but my dad was dating my mom in 78 and 79 and remembers it snowed almost every Thursday that winter.  It was his off day and their date night. He had to walk and got stuck on the highway many a time. lol

He talks about those winters often. That was in Anderson County.
