January 15th-17th 2024 Arctic Blast/Snow Event
WinterWonderland replied to John1122's topic in Tennessee Valley
I can relate! I tried to sleep but kept dreaming I was waking up and it was warm and rainy. In my dream I would go back to bed feeling disappointed. This happened three times and when I finally did get up I was apprehensive about looking outside. But lo and behold, it is a winter wonderland! About an inch and still light snow falling. It's 29 degrees here in Oak Ridge, TN. I'm so looking forward to a day of falling snow. That's a rarity these days! Is there a way to tell where posters live? I check their profile but don't see a location. Folks are posting their current weather conditions and it would be good to know the location they're talking about. Everyone be safe and enjoy the snow! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -

January Medium-Long Range Discussion
WinterWonderland replied to Holston_River_Rambler's topic in Tennessee Valley
So true, John. It's hard to find any info on it. I went to the library and found what the local newspaper had documented, and I also found something online about it being an unusual event for Anderson Co, but that was scant. Folks talk about the blizzard of '93 but never the snowstorms of '96. The blizzard in my town was incredible because of the thundersnow and we did get several inches, but as I recall it was gone in a few days. Of course it was mid March so that's to be expected! It just doesn't have the impact for me that '96 did. I do love me some snow. [emoji3587][emoji3587][emoji3587] Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk- 1,263 replies

January Medium-Long Range Discussion

I live in Anderson County, TN in Oak Ridge and the snow we had in Feb 1996 was incredible. One of the best I've seen in my life time and I'm 68 yrs old. With that particular storm, the mets were not predicting snow, but heavy ice. In inches. The thought of it icing that much was scary. That evening it started sleeting and 30 min later changed to all snow and stayed snow. Never had any ice thank goodness. Here in town we got about 18 inches and I have never seen snow fall that heavily, and straight down cause there was no wind. Businesses closed and people were walking instead of driving. The streets were literally snow packed and it snowed off and on for two weeks. We did a LOT of sledding! Anyway, sorry to be so long with my post, but it truly was a magical time. I even journaled it and glad I did! I just wished I'd gotten some pics! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk- 1,263 replies

Robert Gamble of WxSouth's post on Facebook today... Smooth sailing ahead this week, except tomorrow in VA, Carolinas down to Florida with mainly light precip. There could be an hour or 2 in the NC piedmont early morning for very brief light freezing rain or a sleet pellet, then temps go above 32 ---but will be a raw, cold Monday east of the Apps. Then just a series of dry fronts but much sunnier weather to finish out the week most of the central and Southeast US. The next system with any potential for development of Gulf moisture will be Saturday night and Sunday--very little chance though, but worth a watch in GA, FL, Carolinas for possibly some precip. That is followed by another pretty sharp cool down, that won't last too long.

I was amazed today at the difference in snow amounts in my town Oak Ridge. I live on a ridge in the center of the city and we received a coating of snow. I went for a walk in the south eastern section of town today, down in the "bottom land" near Melton Hill Lake and they had a good 1 1/2 inches of snow and icy roads in places.

Just took the dog out for a pee and almost fell on my arse. Snowing nicely here in Oak Ridge and the ground is coated. Everyone be careful out there; it's slickery!

Light snow started falling here in Oak Ridge about 20 minutes ago. Temp is 36 degrees.

Does this Friday/Saturday event warrant a separate thread?

We received a tad over 3 inches at my house in Oak Ridge, but driving around town there appears to be less snow. I live on a ridge though and this storm was definitely elevation dependent. Was a treat this morning watching two foxes playing!

So we're not getting the "finger" as bad as we were?

I also think Morristown tends to be more conservative with their forecasting.

This storm reminds me somewhat of the storm we had in Feb 1996. Everyone was predicting ice or rain, no snow for our area in the ETN valley, and here in Anderson County we ended up getting pounded. Sleet fell for about 30 minutes then turned to snow. Almost 2 feet and the hardest I've ever seen snow fall. Made for many days of awesome sledding!

I get that this storm is difficult to forecast, but really surprised that NWS has issued absolutely nothing for the east TN Valley. I would expect at least a Hazardous Weather statement of some sort since we have the possibility of wintry precip in the area. It's just odd.
