At first glance, it looks like your typical "southern Iowa is mild, northern Iowa is cold behind the front(or still stuck with deep snow)" map, but then you realize the "cold" is 60º. Very nice out today with temps in the low 50s and full sun. Lots of people out walking/jogging. Little do they know a foot of snow could be looming in coming days. With sunshine being abundant last week, we're paying for it big time this week. Since Monday, it looks to be overcast every single day through Friday. If we get any more sunshine for the rest of the month, it won't be until Leap Day this Saturday. Pretty much trying to repeat much of the final third of last month. A super narrow corridor of snow accumulating up to 2"-4" per hour for a total of 8"-13" in the swath. michsnowfreak Posted February 28, 2020 Share Posted February 28, 2020 Yesterday with winds gusting to 30-40 mph, blowing and drifting snow all day, and wind chills in the single digits, it was a legit deep winter day. We have not had much wind this winter, and this was the first real drifty snow we have had. I typically do prefer more even snow anyway, but it was nice to see the winter wind howling. Barely got above freezing, but the almost-March sun was laying to rest the remaining snow. February ended up being a warm, yet snowy, month in the Detroit area. At DTW, it was 2F above average, but snowfall was also 4.5” above average. DTW finished the month with 14.7” of snow. Meanwhile, imby, I finished February with 20.0” of snow. This ended up being slightly snowier than Feb ‘18 imby, so this was the snowiest February that I’ve kept intense records for (past 3 winters). The largest storm was 6.1” from Feb 25-26th. This month also featured a surprise 2.9” heavy lake effect event that was localized along the 696 corridor. My seasonal total is now up to 44.7”, which is 0.3” higher than last season’s final total. You are indeed correct, while February did not place either in the warmest or snowiest top 20 list, it was definitely a milder and snowier than average February. Despite the overall mildness, 12 days had measurable snowfall and 15 days had 1"+ snowcover. Also 4° on Valentine's day finally eclipsed the record 7° on Nov 13th for coldest temp of the season. After the 13th coldest November on record, Detroit saw the 9th warmest DJF on record. Season snowfall as we begin March is at 36.6", a few inches above average to date, however it doesnt look too wintry coming up. This seems like the type of season that could definitely sneak in a good late season snowstorm, but who knows. Regardless, snowfall has been ok in what has been a frustrating Winter overall.
