As a social worker in a school I understand about the meals, but keep in mind the schools don't feed the kids on holidays and weekends. There could be some contingencies for this, maybe send kids home with a care package of dry goods; the farmers would love the subsidies. Just spitballin here....nd remember, the lawyers of the world helped create this situation. Schools are sued regularly these days. In mu kid's school alone this week, a kid broke an arm in gym and she sprained her wrist and was sent for x rays. I personally have nothing against lawyers, almost became one, and know people who have.

I am talking about today, a Monday. There are hundreds of thousands of kids probably unsupervised because their parents had to go to work.

I honestly think it's the social media backlash (coverage of traffic jams) that creates the real fear (more so than actual legal exposure).

some of the limited attention spans are because they're glued to cellphones most of the day and night, and that negatively impacts how long they can concentrate on one thing.  They're doing studies on the impacts of "screens" on children and the early results dont look so good.

This is true but the adults aren't much better; the younger staff is just as glued to the screens and phones.

Absolutely. But in this day and age, that is what matters. As I have said here for going on ten years, it is the social impact of weather that fascinates me. Caribou ME had a ton of snow this year. Yawn. But DC or NYC getting a predicted 4-8 and maybe more? That's news. Social media is what has heightened this, and it is also used as evidence.

Lovely pics, don. My cousin lives there. Made a fortune as a hairdresser for daytime tv. Did Kelly Rippa's hair for a long time. And she was smart enough to do college and whatever she wanted. Married an ad exec.

Comparing NYC and DC not a good comparison IMO. DC panics over an inch of snow. Of course NYC under Deblaio panics over everything, so maybe you have a point.

I believe Deblasio and NJ's governor are having a contest on who can panic over more non events than the other guy.

Bring it. According to RU my area is around 24 for the season. Not great, but better than it looked 3 weeks ago. It's like watching a soccer match and your team is down a goal in OT, and scores the equalizer. You cheer like mad even though it's not a great result, but it feels like a win.

It's been coming a long time; Bloomberg started closing schools for smaller events, and Christie started doing SEM's for storms in 2014 which were not huge blizzards but 5-10 deals. There are financial reasons for this according to some sources I have read, but don't care to get into them that much.

Point is, it's news. Snow in some little town along Lake Erie well, really now.....they'll be fine with a foot of snow; they have plows, tractors, front loaders, blower, snow cats, and fewer people on the roads. I lost count of how much snow my BIL in ME has this winter and it isn't even a big deal. He was impressed when he was here for the Boxing Day Blizzard though. " Yeah, a little bit a snow theah..."

Yea I think we got about 5 inches on the Bronx/Yonkers border maybe a bit more I fell asleep a little before it ended. Melts so fast in March but still pretty outside for now

you can't just look at its snow maps and say it was abysmal. no model is going to capture the nuances of marginal setups in an urban heat island perfectly. it was an almost entirely snow event here in bed-stuy, save a few minutes of pellets here and there, which i doubt took off more than an inch. i think one lesson from this storm is to not expect urban areas to accumulate in marginal setups during march unless +SN is falling. if this storm had occurred during the day, it would've been no more than a 1-2" storm aside from some shady grassy areas.

Need either +snow or temps below freezing especially in March. As we saw last March it will stick even during the day if it's in the 20s but once its 32 or above it really needs to be really heavy in March to stick, the fact this was at night made it decent for some parts of the city, as you said if this has been daytime it would've been 1-2 inches on grassy surfaces if that

What years did those happen, Chris?  Were those storms that favored SNE over NYC too? It's interesting how Suffolk County often does better with storms that favor SNE over NYC.

edit- sorry I read the snowfall amounts first and got distracted and didn't read where you said that happened last March haha.

That March equinox storm was absolutely epic for locations east of here.  I didn't realize the south fork got so much snow in the mid March storm though!  Did that storm favor SNE (Boston) over NYC?  One of those late developing Miller B's like the April Fools Day storm?

That was an epic storm I live a mile from Islip Airport and we had 3-4” per hour rates and I believe Ronkonkoma had a 5” and hour

Overall this storm went about as I would've expected given the circumstances. I'm not sure why people think it's a big bust, if you actually followed the models and trends the outcome wasn't way off, none of the snow maps were that impressive for the coast except the Euro/RGEM but even both of those models showed mixing at the coast yesterday. North and West even did a little better than expected

NOHRSC interpolated 24hr sfall through 12z/4. imageproxy.php?img=&key=20fe2b78d4e66dffimageproxy.php?img=&key=20fe2b78d4e66dffSeasonal total in this part of Wantage now 34.7.  I thought the banding was well modeled by the NAM and in the resultant s+ area (colder profiles and larger dendrites easier to accum). Max today so far was 31.8 ~630A. now 28.9 with increasingly gusty can and partial sunshine.  We may not get past 32 here in northern Sussex County NJ today.  No matter, melting and settling in progress.

10 miles makes all the difference, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.  Tricky storm.

This is true but the adults aren't much better; the younger staff is just as glued to the screens and phones.

I think with kids it might be even worse because their brains are still developing (similar to why antidepressants aren't recommended for children, and now we're finding out that stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin have major side effects, despite all the marketing hype that tries to cover them up.)

10 miles makes all the difference, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.  Tricky storm.

Wonder how accurate it is, NE Queens seems to do better than the rest of the city in these setups so it wouldn't be shocking, guess it's a bit more rural there

I like the Shoreham amount of 6 inches as the highest for coastal areas, because, being close to SNE, that area usually jackpots for coastal locations in situations like this.  There is a co-op in Mt Sinai near there which keeps official snowfall numbers.  Bayshore might be a little higher if the mix line hit further east on the north shore first, but I was wondering if that's the case why is the LGA number so low?  Whitestone should also be higher if the Bayside number is right, but it's closer to LGA's total.  Could be that urban/suburban thing we were discussing- Bayside is a much more suburban location and might have colder surface temps than LGA or Whitestone.  That makes a difference in late season storms, even at night.

I'm also not sure the Whitestone is accurate, since we had a poster who lives in Whitestone reporting at least 4 inches last night before the storm was even done. In any event NE Queens and the North Bronx are in the best positions in the city for storms like this in terms of furthest from the ocean and also the most rural parts of the city outside of Staten Island (but in this case SI probably had a lot of mixing with the warm air coming from the south)

Last time I measured in Whitestone I measured 4.5” and it snowed for another 30-45 mins. So it’s likely Whitestone ended with about 5”.
