TugHillMatt Posted February 6, 2018 Share Posted February 6, 2018 I am often very curious as to what the snowpack is like in other areas. I know others, like our friends Josh and Jonger, are as well. I am always interested in how quickly the snow is compacting in other places and whether it's powder, concrete, etc... Snow Depth here is about a foot. Bottom half is dense and heavy from this weekend's storm, while the top half is fluff from lake enhancement last night and lake effect today. Now that our ground is nice and frozen below, melting should be a bit a tougher since it won't be aided as much from warm earth. So...what are conditions like where you live? Doesn't happen too often, but we've had some winters where we've had a solid snow pack of 1" or more on the ground from early Dec through early March. This will be the 3rd time I've hit that mark. 6-7" has been the max right as the next thaw has hit. Looks like I'll finally bust thru that ceiling this weekend. OrdIowPitMsp Posted February 8, 2018 Share Posted February 8, 2018 5-6" glacier in areas that receive full sun, the shaded and north facing spots are hanging around 9-10"+. The bottom of the pack is a solid glacier. Wish I had the instruments to do a core sample and figure out moisture content, the 1/22 storm was a lot of qpf. The 2 winter's I lived in Antrim Co down there, '12/13 and '13/14, I had a peak depth of 3' on the ground the first winter, and nearly 30" the second winter. Our peak depth this winter was 10" in mid-December. We have had 44 days with 1"+ snowcover on the ground this season, so all in all its been a good winter since it is only early Feb. After this upcoming snowfall, he may very well have more than Northern Lower Michigan on the ground. I'm sitting at 10 inches here. It has been snowing off the lake all week, but fluff just compacts and compacts as more snow falls. Looking forward to possibly seeing some more snow pack pics in here! Highest in tug hill is 5' and they have 2-4' forecast the next few days. The highest I've ever had living here was 54" back in Nov 2014. It has been a non stop jackpot in extreme SE Michigan. Tonight and tomorrow will be no different. My guess... he gets 10 inches and I get 5. mississaugasnow Posted February 12, 2018 Share Posted February 12, 2018 This week should be interesting to see how the snowpack survives. The freezing rain yesterday here in the GTA might end up saving the snowpack a bit. Forecasted temperatures here are supposed to be 42F and 44F on Wednesday and Thursday. Cool spell, followed by another warm up early next week. Luckily, I think we have enough depth to limp along for at least another week with constant snow cover.
