michsnowfreak
Lack of fresh/deep snow cover here is definitely having an impact. Would probably be a good 4-7 degrees colder with fresh/deep snow. Our snowpack is DEEP but NOT fresh. About a foot of cement slab with no powder topping. Im wondering if the snowpack has anything to do with why we have had such a slow fall here? Temps along the river are more in line with the warm NAM than the cold other models. Sitting at 0F at DTW...after smashing so many record this winter, our record low of -1F today looked to be an easy one and as of now it is 0F. On second thought....other areas whose snowpack isnt fresh either (and probably less deep) dipped well below zero...so maybe its just heat island or something? Who knows. We havent seen UHI nearly as much as normal this winter as its been so cold, weve been due i guess lol.

Even though we have 3-4" here in town, the surrounding farmland/flatland has many bare spots now due to areas where snow had been blown away. So maybe that is having an impact on the whole area. Temp hit -2, which was 8 degrees warmer than forecast.

Temp hit -2, which was 8 degrees warmer than forecast. Open fields here are solidly snow covered but definitely not as deep as elsewhere...in fact Id venture a guess that in residential areas the snow is more than twice as deep (and Im talking depth, not piles or drits or anything). Of course, we dont really have a TON of fields in suburbia, but you get what Im saying lol. There are some bare spots on heavily traveled roads though, countered by mountains of coal-like ice snow I was traveling down a particularly busy road yesterday, and its an interesting site to actually see several brown grass patches here when my snow depth is still 12". Even funnier when you can see a patch of grass in one spot and then the next parking lot people cant even see the road clearly, trying to inch out past the snowbanks. Reminds me of when I was up north in the Soo one year and their depth was like 24" but in town there were patches of grass and dirty snowbanks too. All part of the experience of the up-north winter we are having this year.

It could have been colder than -1 on Wednesday IMBY but once I saw below zero I didn't look again (I don't have one of those stations after my last one broke). My -18F this morning was a low as I saw it may have been lower but I don't keep records so it don't matter to me. It is just crazy cold. But I am loving it BTW I noticed that last night my furnace ran like crazy and I am noticing the ground under my house must be VERY cold. wxman1952
A ridiculous -33°F at Pellston, MI right now! That has to be nearing state monthly records at this point. Pellston ended with -33° but the State low for Michigan was set back in Feb 9th, 1934 at Vanderbilt, MI with -51°. Actually it wasn't "in" Vanderbilt, but at the Pigeon River State Forest headquarters east of Vanderbilt. I don't think we'll ever see that record broke. mjwise
I believe Detroit finished meteorological winter at 20.9 degrees average temperature (26.8, 16.4, 19.4), which will make this the 8th coldest winter since 1874, the coldest since 1977-78, and the first "top 20" coldest winter in nearly 20 years. Combined with it being the 2nd snowiest season overall, definitely one of the most severe winters in recorded Michigan history. We had everything but a full blown blizzard. Also this has been the first four-month stretch of below normal temps since MJJA 2009.

You are correct about the winter stats (and yes, I will be doing some stats/research, but I think its save to call this the most severe winter for all things combined here). But you are off on the 4-month stretch. DTW saw 5 consecutive months below normal DJFMA 2010-11. I enjoyed that as well as the summer 2009 February finished 15th coldest (19.4F) and 9th snowiest (23.4") on record at Detroit. However...most notable is that every day of the month from start to finish had double digit snow depth. That has NEVER happened before since weather records began! MET winter was 8th coldest on record, but I will do some updating to the Detroit records thread.
