DAFF
Noticed the days getting longer today.... At 6:45 there was still a glimmer of light from the sun. A few more weeks with daylight savings will really get people pumped with the itch of spring. The cold of tonight is very impressive to me. Even during the day full sun out and it gave little relief from its bighting grip.
beavis1729
Records for Latest Sub-Zero Highs Broken in Some Areas A very cold, late season arctic air mass has settled over the Upper Great Lakes. Given the magnitude of the cold air combined with ice cover on Lake Superior, much of the west half of Upper Michigan failed to rise to 0F today (Thursday), marking the latest sub-zero maximum temperature on record for a winter season at many locations. Latest sub-zero high prior to today: Houghton 3/05/1890 Ironwood 2/24/1904 Iron Mountain 2/20/1918 Iron River 2/25/1900 NWS Marquette 2/22/1965 Highs today (2/27/2014): Houghton -2 Ironwood 0 Iron Mountain 2 Iron River -2 NWS Marquette -

A few more weeks with daylight savings will really get people pumped with the itch of spring. The cold of tonight is very impressive to me. Even during the day full sun out and it gave little relief from its bighting grip. Once the wind finally died down it did not feel to bad here. Only made it up to 8 during the daylight hours. Was 15 early this morning which prevented today from getting into the record books which stands at 12 for the cold record high. Tomorrow should break it though as the record is 20.. The record low is -11 for today and thus will need to fall pretty quick to nab this.

cyclone77
Lack of fresh/deep snow cover here is definitely having an impact. Would probably be a good 4-7 degrees colder with fresh/deep snow.

michsnowfreak
The temp fall is slow here...4F at DTW at midnight. Im liking that a consensus for snow this weekend is very strong, even though the heaviest stuff will pass to our south. A solid blanket of snow will do WONDERS for our snowpack here...the main roads have mountains of dirty snow, as well as bare patches, and potholes galore, so its not exactly a Currier & Ives winter scene. While the snow is much whiter and still so deep in residential areas, its still basically an off-white colored slab of ice that is in dire need of a refresher. The few dustings of snow this week, followed by wind (surprise surprise) have more or less just settled into tiny drifts against the snicebanks rather than acting as a "refresher". But a few inches of powder, and voila, the up-north-esque deep winter wonderland that weve uncharacteristically enjoyed most of this winter has returned. And cold temps also will be the rule next week, so March sun will be no match.
Powerball
Models seems to be hinting at another system just beyond day 7. That will probably be a better chance for some of us to get the bigger snows.
cyclone77
Now that it's the 28th this makes it the 13th day below zero for Feb. That combined with the 23 days below zero prior to Feb makes for 36 subzero days this winter here. EDIT: 2011-2012 winter only had 2 days subzero, and the 2012-2013 winter also only had 2 days. Have had 15 below zero days here +2 zero days.. Last winter only had 2 sub zero days. Was none in 2012 which only had 4 single digit days. First full month as well to have a low temp below freezing every day of the month in a number of years. January only had 2 days that failed to get below freezing with a 33 and 35.. stormtrackertf
Still a toasty 2 degrees at DTW.Apparently on this date in 1974, a tornado hit Wayne county. Almost unbelievable to be thinking about severe weather at this time of year with the cold we're having now. Even harder to believe in 2 weeks, it will be the 2 year anniversary of that incredible streak of 70 and 80-degree weather and the Dexter, MI EF-3 tornado in 2012.
