As cold as it's been, I'll still gladly take this over extreme heat and humidity any day. At least you can bundle up and stay warm in this weather instead of sweating, huffing and puffing, and feeling like about to pass out in 100-105+ degree heat. There's not too much that can be done in the heat if you have to be outdoors to stay cool (not counting for pool or beach).

It is hard comparing wind chills since the formula was changed in 2001.

I 'believe' that at noon on January 20, 1994, Central Park was at zero degrees.

As cold as this air mass has been, the real story is how infrequent and ephemeral these brutally cold air masses have become in the last two decades.

Yeah we used to have wind chill advisories all the time. Didn't take much. 20 degrees with a 25 mph wind would've been enough back then.

We might still have shot record daily low max at Central Park. Mesonet show max temp of 14 since midnight:

http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/meso_base.cgi?stn=KNYC&time=GMT

It shows 14 at 5:51z (12:51am) though. So I'm not sure.

The meteograms also show the 6 hourly max from 12am to 6am at 14 degrees.

My max since midnight here at my station is 26.3, but I'm much further east.

This is from Upton. The record low max for Central Park is 19 and max for today is 19. So it look like will probably tie. EWR and JFK likely will beat theirs.:

IN ADDITION RECORD LOW MAX TEMPS WILL LIKELY BE SET OR TIED AT SOME CLIMATE
SITES TODAY. THE MAX TEMPS BELOW WERE ACHIEVED JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SITE............RECORD LOW MAX TEMP (F).......OBSERVED MAX TEMP (F)

Things would have been more interesting if the Arctic front was about 3 hours faster.

I was at my new place before and I had no water...Frozen pipes?......But that's the landlords... good thing I didn't move in yet...today reminded me of the cold wave during late January 1963...that one had single digits into the next morning...That's possible tonight...

Reporter on fox just said its the coldest it's been in ny since 1896 wtf that's just horrible journalism off by a mere 19 degrees

She clarified at the end of the report for this day

This whole thing is out of control.  If you look at what Don posted on the main forum, we are largely seeing the coldest temps in between 5 and 20 years, depending on the location.
