Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapids City reported a 68mph gust with 1/8 mile visibility at 2319z.  What an amazing storm.

Possibly the worst storm in the lower 48 this fall/winter and it comes in October. Not in total area, but in one spot.

That Rapid City obs is down at 3500 ft or so too! That high ground that is just west of Rapid City probably has 30" by now!

Out on the plains near Spearfish:

Been watching that awning across the street. Snow builds up so much and then there's an avalanche, then the process repeats.

Lead is in the lead!

43.5" is extreme impressive and no doubt a record for so early in the season. They're going to break 50" with no problem. Still alot of moisture backing into the BH.

Reports of extensive tree damage have been reported.

0855 PM HEAVY SNOW SUNDANCE 44.40N 104.37W
10/04/2013 E24.0 INCH CROOK WY PUBLIC

STILL SNOWING. MUCH TREE AND LIMB DAMAGE.

Reading this, it's probably safe to assume most roads in the northern Black Hills are blocked with fallen trees. The trees sit on a shallow layer dirt with rock underneath - not the best anchoring setting for the trees.

1000 PM HEAVY SNOW 1 N DOWNTOWN RAPID CITY 44.10N 103.23W
10/04/2013 E15.0 INCH PENNINGTON SD TRAINED SPOTTER

SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE AT MANY LOCATIONS NORTH OF
DOWNTOWN RAPID CITY. WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES DUE TO LINE
DAMAGE/TREE LIMBS FALLING ON OVERHEADS. SEVERAL STREETS
ARE PARTIALLY BLOCKED BY LARGE TREE BRANCHES. MOST SIDE
ROADS ARE IMPASSABLE BY ALL EXCEPT LARGE 4-WHEEL DRIVE
VEHICLES DUE TO SIGNIFICANT SNOW DRIFTS.

as much as NAM bashing is a lot of fun (it's a frequent past time in the ne forum esp in the winter), it did sniff out obscene snowfall totals with this storm just like it did with the feb storm in sne.

the model may not have exactly pinpointed the areas in sne but it was close enough and had the right idea...the nam always leaves just enough interest to not completely toss it out the window

liquid equivalents have to be approaching four inches in spots...snow depths may not be maximized due to severe winds but awe inspiring nonetheless

Its going to be hard to beat, good way of looking at it!

:o Broke the record by that much? That's nearly 13X the previous record!! What a boss thing to happen  B) .

Well count me as surprised by this system too, didn't think SD was capable of producing such epic blizzards this early in the year including solely in the mountains or very high elevations. Not sure how to gauge the rarity of it either. Its SD's version of Lake Storm Aphid but only this is not lake effect snow. The Deadwood webcam isn't working for me either, stuff is goin' down.

This isn't the thread for this.. but for every "sniff it out" NAM victory there seems to be a .5 ground report from the NAM showing a 1.5 qpf output.

Yeah, it broke the record "like a boss"! haha

Still trying to access any of the cams, but I'm thinking the power could be out for many areas.

Here's a DOT cam from Spearfish.

I think that's the interstate...

Waiting to see the Lead total, this one is more Deadwood.

I don't understand this 13X number you are quoting.
