As aggravating as slushfest 2013 has been here, it cannot be overlooked that we have YET again managed a crazy February. What is happening in these parts in February (in terms of consistency) lately is simply unheard of. No other way to put it.

Barring any unexpected snow this evening, February snowfall will wrap up at 23.5" at DTW and 22.0" IMBY. This makes it the 8th snowiest Feb on record for Detroit!

Top 10 snowiest Febs at Detroit since 1881

01.) 38.4" - 1908

02.) 31.7" - 2011

03.) 28.5" - 1881

04.) 28.0" - 1900

05.) 28.0" - 1926

06.) 27.0" - 2010

07.) 24.2" - 2008

08.) 23.5" - 2013

09.) 20.8" - 1986

10.) 19.6" - 1898

Feb snowfall at Detroit since 2007

2007- 14.1"

2008- 24.2"

2009- 8.5"

2010- 27.0"

2011- 31.7"

2012- 10.2"

2013- 23.5"

Longterm Feb avg: approx 9.5"

4-yr avg: 23.1"

7-yr avg: 19.9"

11-yr avg: 16.0"

NCDC will have to do some of their patented "quality control" when the next set of normals come out laugh.png

With many places seeing accumulating snow without ever getting below freezing, it made me wonder what the most has fallen here. I looked at calendar days with lows at or above 33 and found 7 occurrences of 4" or more since 1948 at CLE. The most being 7.8" on december 2, 1974 where the high was 37 and low was 33. I'm curious what other cities records are.

Looking at the hourly obs for DTW.....

From Feb 26-28, 1.00" precip fell in the form of snow. Total snowfall accum was 7.1". Peak depth was 5". Current 1pm depth is 3". Temp during all snowfall ranged from 33-35F. In fact, Feb 27 calendar day had 4.0" snow with a high/low of 36F/33F.

IMBY I estimate 0.75"-0.80" liquid fell as snow, total accum 5.1". Peak depth 3", current depth 1-2" (spots of 2" but also some bare spots).

Well nighttime is about to fall on the last day of meteorological winter. A snowy Feb ends with large snowbanks but unfortunately in my area, snowcover is about half covered/half bare. Its actually seems like half of lawns have 2", half are bare (outside the piles) or have just a few patches. So im calling depth 1". Its not scenic, but at least theres resemblance of winter rather than spring as we head into March. I too think ma Nature is not done for this region snowstorm-wise.

December get an F, January gets a C, February gets a B-. Overall Met winter gets a C-. Last winter got an F-.

The Christmas Miracle snow saved the first half of winter from a full F.

Big March coming for FWA! :)

Hopefully we can squeeze in 6-10" for March atleast, that way YYZ will end up with a normal snowfall season and compared to the last few marches only 2011 was actually decent, lol since 2008.

This month was extraordinary, way above average snowfall. Loved it :D It was worth the wait.

Temperature-wise, it looks like Toronto will finish right around average. Here's hoping for a March with a blend of 1870, 1960, 1984 and 2008.

March 1870 was insanity, that aint never happening again LOL .

But i like the other analogs, they have more reasonable snowfall tally's haha. Lets hope its a good month then i'm ready for Spring in April, lol.

Finished with 11.4" of snow for Feb.  Not a bad rally after the most abysmal start to winter I've ever seen.

Met winter finishes with 2 days below zero.  Coldest temp of the winter was only -3.  Last winter's lack of sub zero temps (one or two days) combined with this winter's lack of sub zero weather is truly astonishing.  The QC averages 10 days below zero on average.  So that's nearly 20 days less than average regarding below zero days combining this winter with the last.  Extremely cold air can be kind of interesting to experience and forecast, but it's definitely been a big money saver on the ol' heating bill the last two winters.

Februarys snowfall will come in at 54.2cm (20.6") at YHM with a mean temp. of -5.6°C compared to an average of -5.2°C. However, the snowfall report is likely underestimated for a few events. The Feb. 8 storm comes in at 24.8cm despite the fact that every report from around the city measured at least 32cm. I wonder if YHM uses a Nipher gauge as well? Regardless, still a very snowy and cold month.

Don't follow YHM too closely but from what I've seen they're usually ok. May have been a one off thing. Had Pearson measured Feb 8 correctly they'd be pushing 30" this month. Although, had they measured the wet snowfalls correctly that would have brought that number down some I guess. You gotta take the good with the bad.

Yeah. The actual snowfall number probably isn't too far from the truth though likely lowballed. The airport actually measured 22.4cm with the last storm we had while that number was more like 10cm imby (if that) so ~55cm is probably a good estimate of what I saw this month.

And 3rd all-time snowiest February? That's hard to fathom after what an atrocious start we had. Wouldn't have seen that coming from a mile away, not even after the Feb. 8 storm.

What happened in Muncie? Heat exhaust vent near the site? That's GISS legit though... So no worries.

0.7" more brings YYZ to an even 25.0" for the Feb 2013. 3rd all time.

Feb 2008...30.2"

Feb 1950...26.2"

Feb 2013...25.0"

Very impressive. When you take the downtown stats back to 1930, February 2013 still ranks third! Essentially, this was the third snowiest February experienced by most people alive in Toronto today.

Intriguing also, how it finished so close to 1950 - another year which had a cold November and a January of wild temperature swings before getting a cold February and March. Funny to think of the CTV reporter asking a lady on the street in late January what she thought of temperatures in the mid 50s in January. Her response, "it's scary. Clearly there's something wrong with our climate. We should be doing something about it".

Ummm, very similar pattern to winter 1950...

Amazing, you had more snow in February than I've had in the past 2 entire winters combined.
