assuming this has a large area of impact I think that power issues could last awhile

crews all over will be busy unlike a local event where they can converge from a distance

That's probably one of the main concerns with this storm...its large. So if we see a track right up into the interior, there could be a large aerial coverage of damage. The biggest question is still just how fast it will b e moving when it makes landfall and how strong it will be. I can't really see it being stronger than a cat 1...perhaps weak cat 2, but forward speed increases as we get closer, then that could change.

Thats almost why I want the heavy rain instead of the wind, at least for up here. Right now I'm on the wind side, but I'm expecting a tick east as we get closer.

Irene: Eye is popping now, with heavy/cold convection firing around it.

RT @basevelocity We're pleased to announce RadarScope 1.0 for Android.

Just wondering whether anyone knows their version upgrade policy... I didn't see it mentioned in their FAQ, but maybe I missed it on the site.

While I know that they have a track record on the other mobile platform, I'm a bit gun shy about version 1.0 of anything.

I'm seriously thinking about offering up my old house as a homebase for anyone wanting to chase this thing in coastal CT. The catch is you'd agree to help with any necessary yard/basement cleanup. Of course the lack of Internet and furniture may also be a turn off...so I'm not sure I'd get any takers on that. But hell...worth a shot.

FORECAST VALID 28/0000Z 36.0N 75.2W

MAX WIND 90 KT...GUSTS 110 KT.

50 KT...100NE 100SE 60SW 80NW.

34 KT...225NE 225SE 140SW 140NW.

Large.

Yeah the 18z GFS tracked it up E CT but had big winds over Cape Cod. You won't need to be right near the center for huge winds on the coast.

Hello from the lodge at Grand Canyon village, AZ. Wow. Amazing developments over the past few days. Now, a question for Scooter or anyone else who wants to answer. We have a flight at 515pm (eastern time) on Saturday out of Phoenix and landing at Logan at 1030pm on Saturday at 8/27. What are the chances we can land in Boston before the worst of the conditions? Most earlier flights on Saturday or Friday flights are $350-400, so were hoping that that flight can get in time. If not, we may not be back in Mass until Tuesday, depending on how bad this ends up. Crazy stuff.

00z suite should be interesting!!

Thanks for any responses.

BOS will be fine on Saturday...storm won't start impacting the region until Sunday morning.

Will, what am I looking at wind wise for my area? 80+mph?

It all depends on the track...if it goes west into interior SNE, then you have a shot at a hurricane force gust...but if it goes E like over Buzzards Bay or something, then you probably won't gust much past 60mph.

Thanks. I knew the hurricane wasn't supposed to make landfall until later Sunday, but I thought some rain might start impacting flights late night Saturday and therefore that flight would be a problem. Hopefully not.

Maybe my first day of Senior year will be postponed because of a hurricane/power issues. That would be cool.

I seen that tornados could be a possibility from Worcester to the coastal plain...any idea of the chance this happens? Is it normal or pretty rare? That would be scary...

Tornadoes can happen with any landfalling storm... the number one trigger for tornadoes is atmospheric spin, and hurricanes are already spinning violently, so all that's needed is a decent embedded cell to spin up some rainwrapped twisters. Though since the air mass won't be particularly tropical up here relative to FL or Gulf Coast landfalls, I don't think we have to worry about the 80+ twister outbreaks that some storms (Ivan, Frances, Beulah) can create.
