Mid-Winter Appreciation Thread

Not just a computer winter person here--can't be, around these parts in generalz, and where our homestead is in particular. Winter is not just a hobby but an actual lifestyle for several months every year. Snow immersion!

Every so often, I tune out from the forecasts, models & discussions for a few days and simply just keep an eye to the sky, watch the signs & sniff the air. It's a good exercise for any weather lover. We've all got a deep-seated instinct to pay attention to the real world and it feels good to actually use & harness this trait.

Winter lives on here in the hills.

Winter does indeed live in the hills. Turn on, tune out.

Beautiful shot, just amazed at the number of people agonizing over a brief warmup a week away. I am glad Pete started this thread, all some people want to talk about is how warm it gets for two days. Look back at all the posts made by some pretty respectable posters, obsessed with how warm it gets. Winter lives and sensory experience as you describe is the way I live.

You can reverse this and say the same for summer. In August we get highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s for a couple days and weenies are obsessing over a short cool snap, grinding their teeth for winter. Then it's back in the 90s first week of September. No one ever trashes the coldminstas when that happens, so why's it the other way around? Seems like hypocrisy , no?

Enjoy the wx no matter what the wx.

7/0, Heading for negative territory again tonight. Have had more nights below zero this season than the last several it would seem. Very persistent cold. Looks like a few chances for a little snowpack recharge over the weekend. The Great winter of '10-'11 keeps rolling on. After a bit of a mid-month lull things should start to cut loose again. Really enjoying this one. Get out in the snow people. Great weekend for Winter sports is coming up so make plans!

Wills pumping Windex Sat, looks good on the NAM GFS

BOX hints at it p'raps?

SAT...

MID LEVEL TROF AND ATTENDING COLD FRONT SWEEP ACROSS THE REGION

DURING THE AFTERNOON. SOME POTENTIAL FOR PRECIP TO BECOME ORGANIZED

ALONG AND JUST AHEAD OF THE FRONT AS BOTH NAM AND GFS SUGGEST MODEST

MID LEVEL LIFT AND LAPSE RATES APPROACHING MOIST ADIABATIC. HOWEVER

LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND DEEP LAYER MOISTURE APPEAR LIMITED. SO FOR

NOW WILL JUST GO WITH CHANCE POPS FOR SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS. LATER

SHIFTS WILL HAVE TO EVALUATE IF LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND MOISTURE

BECOMING MORE ROBUST POSSIBLY LEADING A MORE ORGANIZED LINE/S/ OF

SNOW SHOWERS ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE FRONT.
