SnowenOutThere Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM Share Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM 10 hours ago, psuhoffman said: I appreciate your point and 10 or 20 years ago I would have agreed and I've even written things very similar. I have a sociology degree so I can even confirm everything you say is clinically correct. However, I have become jaded, and my definition of stupid now includes people who are unable to get their heads out of their own arse and realize when they are being manipulated. And yes I realize that definition of stupid means about 50% of the human population is stupid. I grew up in a conservative Christian family. I was forced to attend Sunday school, until they asked me to stop because I would point out God was a terrorist monster for killing all the Egyptian first born children over a political agenda when he could have just snapped his fingers and got what he wanted. Apparently that wasn't the message they wanted me to get from the passover lesson. But my point is I was subjected to the same attempts at programming and propaganda that every other conservative was. And I will admit it took me a while to overcome it. When I was 15 I did something horrible. A boy who was clearly gay tried to be my friend and I avoided him because of how the other students were teasing me over being nice to him. I was a coward. I am ashamed that I was too weak at that age to tell the rest of them to go F themselves for how they were treating that boy. But I eventually did grow up, realized what utter BS conservatives were selling, and overcame the programming. So I have absolutely no sympathy for the people who choose to remain in that place mentally. Lastly for the record I am no longer trying to change anyone's mind. I spend 20 years doing that and it's useless. I am living my life and telling those people what I think of them, and they can go F themselves. I no longer care enough to try to save them from themselves. They can keep voting for policies that F them over for all I care. F around and find out! I do feel bad for the good people who get hurt by them but I've realized I can only do what I can do on an individual personal level. I donate my time and money to organizations that make a difference. I make sure day to day to be kind and generous to people. I coach. I teach. I make sure my children will NEVER by like those people. But unfortunately I think that no matter what there are too many stupid people who will always be easy to manipulate by powerful people with nefarious motives and that struggle is inevitable . Are people unable to take their "heads out of their own arse" to blame when our society tells us to enjoy the smell of our shit? I have the upmost respect for you as both a winter weather posters and someone who doesn't back down when some posters poke the climate change conversation. But, anyone on "our" side who sees the conservative base as the enemies are looking through distorted glass as well. To place blame at the feet of those who bought into what our society tells them is taking the easy way out at best and malpractice at worst. We are all trying to make our one go around the sun worth it, nobody believes themselves to be using their one life to hurt others - but when our system is based on ruthless competition and a fight over every resource we all will wind up hurting someone for something we don't need. To reemphasize my point, to do so is not stupidity or a deliberative attempt to hurt one another but to go along with the natural forces that act upon us both sociologically and psychologically. A quote sums up my thoughts perfectly here: "I don't know why you did what you did. But it's hard to be mad when you're just as stuck as I am" My response to the claim of "there are too many stupid people who will always be easy to manipulate by powerful people with nefarious motives" is that we've (the left) won before. All the positive parts of the world we inhabit is because someone, somewhere in the past, cared and burnt their present to create the future we now hold. To reject the notion that change can come is to embrace the same song that those on the right sing, albeit with a different and arguably sadder melody. I don't know what the answer is. Frankly, if I get to live to your age I might agree with you, but I have to believe you are wrong. The most radical thing any person can do is to have empathy for one another, no matter how much "they" fight you. I know what I say is idealistic, that it is an opinion that will get me hurt, one that will leave me disappointed time and time again, and one that may never come true in my lifetime. However, the people believed, perhaps delusionally, that we deserve better than what we are told is possible have won before, and they will win again. Don't surrender to the ease of giving up hope in your fellow humans; that is exactly what those in power want the most.

And I cannot believe you would be okay with Lamar going somewhere else and getting a ring and leaving us with nothing (hello days with no franchise QB). Lamar can be here for the overhaul that a needs to happen mostly on defense alone! (That + OL). Pocket passer Lamar will still be able to get a ring, imo Mobility can still last a couple more years. And...Biscotti firing DeCosta is not an impossibility either. I can't imagine Biscotti being happy about us missing the playoffs again. But what you can't do while you're overhauling the defense is to completely dismantle your offense by not re-signing Lamar. That's just dumb to me. Lamar is injury prone and he ALWAYS chokes in the playoffs, not exactly a great combination. I can guarantee you Mahomes or Allen would be playing with this sprained ankle. He is like Charmin. This is the NFL, not tiddlywinks.

You obviously don't know what the average recovery time for a high ankle sprain is, then. 4-6 weeks. So somehow, in a non-playoff situation, Lamar was supposed to come back the next week or two and play on it hobbling around not able to plant or throw? With 12 games to go and no bye week until December? Bruh...no QB is gonna do that. No player is doing that period--not with that kind of sprain. I'm sorry but these arguments about this particular injury are straight up ignorant now that we know what kind of sprain it is. Call him injury prone I get, because that can certainly be a legit discussion. But arguing that he play on a high-ankle sprain for weeks just because Mahomes somehow did it for a couple games? (And again him doing that was an extreme outlier to the norm) Illogical and unrealistic argument.

Why did they list him as day to day for 3 weeks? No other updates. Then last week(Thursday?) Lamar himself spoke and said he was dealing with a high ankle sprain, per the the medical staff. Really? Nothing from DeCosta? Minter? Just continued to say day to day? This isnt a good situation dude. There is a possibility that Lamar may not have wanted to put it out there either. Notice how the national media can never get many details when he's out. But regardless of the reason...how do you go from this to "Lamar and the Ravens should part ways"? That's LaConfora mania stuff right there, lol What kind of dangerous game? What kind of bad situation? I mean Lamar could've revealed the injury at any time. Coulda been his choice for all we know (although I'd love for somebody to ask him why he didn't say anything earlier). To me this was more gamesmanship than anything else. They aren't betraying Lamar or smearing him on purpose, or something damaging to the relationship. I doubt that...and once he (most likely) extends, this will all be moot and he'll be here. With all the Lamar critics in the media and elsewhere, you think it was better to have him considered to be day-to-day for 3 effing weeks? What kind of bullshit is that? If the diagnosis is a high ankle sprain, then the team needs to report it as such. Instead it was left to speculation by the insiders and others about the extent of the injury, which just feeds the perception that he won't play with a minor injury/unless he is 100%.

It's complete BS, they're trying to cover for him because he has them by the balls. Right after it happened they said if it was a playoff game he could have went back in, all of a sudden 3 weeks later it's a high ankle sprain. I have a bridge to sell you.

That is what's called a conspiracy theory. And as genuine of a person as Lamar is, he would not be the type to get up there and lie either even if told to...he said himself what the injury was. Really even with previous injuries he has always come out later and detailed what was going on. I get the feeling he likes to keep things private (even though the strategy isn't exactly helpful in public perception).

When they say he could have gone back in, they/he don't know the extent of the injury at that point, and if he thought he could go back in, sometimes its adrenalin. Sometimes players go back in and play right after the injury and then find out a day later its more serious. I think it was a high ankle sprain the whole time. What I question is why they went with the day-to-day status for damn near 3 weeks. That's not Lamar. That's the GM. I am kind of done with DeCosta, same as I am with the piece of shit, gaslighting Orioles GM.
CAPE
A high ankle sprain is typically a 3 week recovery. Lets see if he plays this week. Lamar cant save this pathetic defense that EDC built though. Nor the OL that is currently in a shambles. He will probably get hurt again playing behind that mess.

Also, living where I do (there are some wonderful things of where I live and some of the people are nice) for the last 20 years has been eye opening. When I got into a fight with some loser chud at Walmart who was calling the Muslim cashier a “sand Nger” you think that was because he just wanted to make the most of his one spin? The contractor working on my deck who told me the best part of living her is there are no black people. Sure that was out of love. Sorry 20 years of that’s changed my opinion of the goodness of humanity. I don't blame you for that change, and frankly my argument doesn't rely on the notion that people are good. I wish they were, but there are more than enough counterexamples to make it an unrealistic claim. My argument is a one which places the onus of our behavior onto the competitive and exploitative mode of production society operates under. No wonder people are nasty when we are told that other people succeeding is to our disadvantage, or that more people means less to go around. It creates the interactions motivated by hate you talk of. So yes, I think its a valid claim to say that there are people who want to hurt others and are what we can categorize as morally wrong people. However, I think it's fine to add a consonant claim which emphasizes that behavior is a product of the greater system society has setup. We are all adaptive to the environment were in, and it happens our environment is one which favors hate over care. My real claim, and goal, is arguing that our system doesn't need to be that way and there are alternatives. I know that such a change is one which I won't even see the start of, but I also believe its folly to think capitalism will somehow exist for all time forever into the future. I think our situation is analogous to asking a peasant in 13th century Europe if feudalism will last forever. To them it may seem so, but that is because they are blinded by their historical moment. As for how this translates to day-to-day interactions I'm not really sure. Extend empathy towards others, but if they're "bad" people then they also deserve to be called out on their behavior. Honestly, what would your advice be to someone who was in your place 30 years ago?

psuhoffman
@SnowenOutThere WRT advice, first of all I have made so many mistakes in my life I don't know how valid any advice I give would be. But a few things I think I think now... 1) Invest your energy in people who deserve it 2) focus most of your attention on things you have a modus of control, don't waste energy on fights you have very little ability to affect change 3) if you are going to invest a lot of time and energy on external abstract fights...the one I think is most worth fighting right now is trying to change the landscape of the information infrastructure of our society. Long term I don't think the battles we are fighting are winnable in the current information ecosphere. We lost the editorial system that produced an objective reality and truth for society. There was plenty wrong with that system, but at least it stood to prevent society from being inundated with BS and falling victim to a reality where anyone can say anything and it all seems to hold equal value. I am not sure what the solution is. 30 years ago the solution was to never let us get to this point. To not allow companies like Fox to circumvent established regulations on news by registering themselves as "entertainment" while portraying themselves as "news". The left was asleep at the wheel while the right systemically attacked the sources of our information so they could win a long term framework argument with society. Destroying objective truth is very valuable to people who hold opinions contrary to all objective evidence. This then became amplified when the internet, which is largely unregulated, became the main source of information. How to put that back in the bag now? It will be very difficult but we need some kind of editorial regulation of what is acceptable as "news" or we are screwed because too many people are not smart enough to be reliable editors of their own information sources.
