It's best where no human structures exist. I absolutely love severe thunderstorms. My favorite weather memory as a kid was the July mid 90s severe storm that tracked across the south shore. I cannot remember the exact date but the cover of news day the next day (I had it hanging in my room for years) said 5pm blackout. The gust front at the onset sent huge branches flying out of the backyard trees into the front yard. Estimated winds about 70mph. The trees still showed damage for many years after. The 98 derecho was another epic storm. And we will be lucky to hear a rumble or two today.

It's fun to recollect in the aftermath but I remember I lost thousands of dollars worth of equipment because of them and wired my entire house with UPS to control surges and sags. I actually had one of my computers burn because of a thunderstorm, as in I could smell it burning (It was connected to a surge protector-- clearly those things are absolutely worthless-- so I bought a computerized UPS). Plus the sound of lightning really scares me. I had to replace the roof and balcony at my other house when trees fell on them. Had to hire someone to clear out more trees that were damaged in that microburst. Keep that stuff where no one lives lol. I'd much rather experience a hurricane, they don't cause that kind of damage here.

I think the storm you're talking about had that, I enjoyed that one. I just do not want lightning-- unless it's ball lightning lol. I enjoyed the Labor Day 1998 tornado outbreak, but moreso because the tornado didn't hit my house lol.

But I remember every second of the downburst like it was yesterday. I had a friend visiting from Jersey and he was freaking out. It was dark as night with torrents of sideways rain hitting the house. There is something about the smell of the air from all the crushed leaves that’s unforgettable after the storm. I’m trying to think if we have ever had a severe storm before Memorial Day on the island. I know we had hail in the April mid 90s NE severe outbreak. The stabilizing effect of the ocean is just too powerful the majority of the time in the spring. Which is exactly what has happened with this current event.

Severe is no fun when you're on the receiving end of the damage. The September 2010 tornado passed literally above my house. It was a weak one so my house was fine but I lost so many giant trees in the neighborhood it still pisses me off to this day.

I haven't seen them in a very long time. Did they just disappear for awhile? After they feast on the leaves fort a while, they tend to die off, if not sprayed-controlled-killed. The oaks will have a second leafing in late June and attempt to recover. This is our second year in a row. So far minor but noticeable. Can't hear them eating the leaves yet when you walk the street kr see the brown caterpillar poop on th street. Hope it doesn't get too bad. I remember once back in late 70's or early 80's there was near total defoliation of trees especially oaks. Just disgusting critters. They destroyed the last large remaining old growth coastal oak forest on the east coast in the late 70s on Gardiners Island. I would have done anything to see 600 year old white oaks. The island is pretty much off limits now anyway.
