Tea I don't like the sound of tonight. Tv-27 said they think the NWS will expand the freeze watch south to include the lower Susquehanna Valley tonight. We will be spending an hour or two prepping this evening. Worst case scenario depictions on models would destroy a lot of our stuff if we do not cover so going to assume the worst just in case. I don't really think their really worried about frost...its the freezing temps. Highly favorable radiational cooling conditions combined with very low pwat airmass signals increasing confidence of a potentially damaging freeze across the northern half of CPA. We expanded freeze watch to the I-80 corridor and blended minT toward tabular MOS numbers which will challenge some daily low temps records. MAV is 21F at KBFD and would not surprised if the usually colder spots across the northern tier drop into the upper teens! Needless to say it will be about as cold as it can be for mid May tonight into early Thursday morning! The other nuance in the forecast tonight is that despite the unseasonably cold temps, the incoming airmass may actually be too dry to get widespread frost formation. Our in-house probability of frost/forecast builder procedure is quite bearish on frost so we cut back/capped coverage from widespread to areas. Locations across the southern half of the area where a freeze watch is not in effect, could easily see at lest some patchy frost with near-freezing temps capable of damaging sensitive vegetation. Temps have continued to fall from our midnight high of 62.8 - we are currently at 52.7 here in East Nantmeal. Tonight will see many areas fall into the 30's for what should be the last time until October. Below normal temperatures should continue through Friday before rebounding to near normal on Saturday. Perfect radiational cooling conditions will allow temperatures to fall below freezing in most areas and some locations could see temperatures into the mid 20s. A freeze watch remains in effect and will likely be upgraded to a warning later this afternoon. I am looking at a forecast low of 27 right now. Really pushing the ticket tonight if the colder readings come to fruition. It has only reached freezing 3-4 times in May at MDT in history of record keeping with the latest in the month being May 11, 1966. Not saying it gets to freezing at MDT but still a chance for some impressive temps tonight considering tomorrow will be one week past that May 11 date. Our Area Forecast Discussion says: "Right now, we [sic] bottom readings out in the low-mid 20s for our far northern counties, but some lows near, or even a shade below 20, would not be unrealistic." So we may have places in PA that may get into the teens. I thought meeting or beating our record of 31 would be impressive. Teens would be amazing. In other news right now -- yes, there is some other news at this hour-- crews are out replacing four light poles that got pulled and twisted and are now leaning into street while building slowly being taken apart at the corner. Crews not only unlucky to still be out this late but it is cold out there, of course. People coming later to redo damaged concrete sidewalks will have a much easier job. I am sure glad I don't have to get up early tomorrow; my sleep would have been interrupted. Actually it is surprising it is not a lot noiser out there. Now i'll see what damage was caused by this on the annual flowers, blueberries, strawberries, tomato plants, etc in the next few hours. according to my ambient it dropped below 32 at 3:45am. That is amazingly low for May 18th. (Not questioning, it was forecast by some models). We have strawberries and they have survived this earlier in the spring.
