Today is the 5th anniversary of the December 2020 snowstorm. This weekend's snowstorm was the biggest December snowstorm since then.

I don't think so. That was the day my brother and sister-in-law got married. I remember it being 70 and sunny in the morning, maybe a little breezy and cloudy in the afternoon during the ceremony, but no tornado.

Had this originally in the other thread but moved here.  Regarding the intense rates and low visibility of the 12/30/2000 storm, here's a pic I took with a good ol' SLR (non digital) camera.  For reference, the car on the right is at most 75-80 feet away.  Still doesn't do it justice.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the Dec 30th, 2000 snowstorm that left a foot of snow in NYC and was the biggest storm since the blizzard of '96.

On this Day in 2013, models started honing in on a winter storm across Midwest that would make Its way to northeast and amplify off the coast. New Year’s Day NHL classic was in Michigan and it was snowing heavily. I remember thinking wow that’s coming to us. By January 2nd we were under winter storm warning for 6-10+” of snow, near blizzard conditions. All out blizzard for eastern New England and Long Island though. Was great tracking that one. A kickstart to an amazing winter in 2014, the best I’ve ever seen second to 2011 (which I wasn’t into weather back then but it was still cool to see all that snow too).

I remember tracking the rain/snow line on the old Accuweather radar.  This storm was probably the best example I've ever seen of the saying "you have to smell the rain to get the best snows."

A few favorite memories of this storm:

• Being at my childhood best friend’s parents’ home during college Christmas break the night before watching Paul Kocin (my buddy has since become a meteorologist!) break down a development
• Waking up around 6 the next morning hearing my dad say if it was 50 miles further east it would have missed us
• Essentially seeing a foot and a half of snow drop in under eight hours at our house

Pre-smart phone weather is something we will never got back. There was some mystery there.

This was the first storm I “tracked” on a weather community. I was only 14 years old. Joined up on the weather channel forums and wright-weather I believe. About 1-2 weeks before this storm our local met. Hurricane Schwartz had a segment on NBC10 Philly about a pattern change in the LR. He spoke about something called a -NAO which made me curious. Not sure why I remember this vividly, but I do lol. I always loved weather and snow so I did some internet searches and found the message boards. Before this I would get my weather news from TWC local forecasts and their 5 day outlooks lol. There was no model snow maps really that I remember. If I recall, people just posted snow fall amounts from the MRF or ETA. Using precip maps and soundings I suppose.


Anyway, the night of the storm I stayed up all night watching the radar. I remember speaking to our very own Ji on AOL AIM and him telling me how big of a bust this event was for DC.

I didn’t know much, but watching the radar I could tell the storm was farther E than expected. Luckily it just clipped us good enough to get a few hours of +SN in the morning down here in Philly. Ended with around 8 or so I believe.

I remember speaking to someone in C Nj on aim early in the morning as well. He was going nuts at how heavy the snow was and reported thunder snow. I think his screen name was Boltaire or Killerhamster. He could be a member here since he lived in your region, who knows.

Good times, then later in that season we had the March 01 bust which taught me a lot about this hobby

LI crew and @The 4 Seasons remember 1/4/18? That was an absolute monster for my area, LI, and much of NE. Actually looking at the snow map reminds me a lot of 1/29/22.

 

Don’t think I ever realized how much snow that one dropped in northern Maine…

And wow, I also didn’t realize 1/22/29 had some crazy maxes right around me. I’m pretty much spot on the left point in the 1 where it says 16 on this map over Toms River, and that’s about exactly what I had in that storm. But I just missed out on local maxes of 18-19 and apparently 21! Crazy. 
 

 

This one also crushed LI… really crushed, like 25 inches I recall? And the city + immediate metro did a bit better than in 1/4/18; a bit spottier in New England but some areas also got absolutely crushed IIRC. 
 

Both storms seem as if they were a 50ish mile westward shift away from being properly historic.

Yeah this ok here def a solid blizzard but 2021 and 2017 were better

What an embarrassment of riches the 2000-2018 period was.  If this storm happened anytime in the 80s or 90s it would be referred to knowingly as the Blizzard of '18 like we talk about the Blizzard of '83 or '96.  But because of when it happened it was just another ho hum foot+ storm lost in the mix.
