NCWX
Leland NC here. 4.5 miles west of Wilmington. I think we are screwed. Riding it out. Half my neighbors are gone the other half are sticking around. But with this latest update I am doubting staying.
ROOSTA
IMO The GFS is goofoo. Do not base decisions off current run. Stick with the EURO
Hoosier
Not saying it couldn't happen, but it would take incredibly bad luck for the eyewall to rake such a long length of coastline of NC/SC.
olafminesaw
I saw a, blow Florence away with fans, campaign on Facebook. I guess it's working, because models are trying their best to keep it offshore.

Who knows how accurate it is, but my weather app has the storm going almost directly through Leland as a Cat 2. STRAP DOWN THE KEGS!! Oh... and maybe think a little harder about fleeing. I would flee.

As long as you are safe from flooding and have a half decent "safe room" it isn't crazy to stay and experience hurricane winds.
NCWX
We are at 60 feet above sea level. Our neighborhood is built on the highest point in our county. Calling it a night. See you all tomorrow.

This storm is 500 miles in diameter, give or take a shoe. It's going to be insanely windy there before it ever makes official landfall. Surge shouldn't be an issue at that elevation, but the winds... at the very least the power will be out and the water contaminated. I don't trust that the relief efforts will be fast or efficient. You can laugh at me after it's over, seriously, I would love to be wrong.

buckeye
My folks live in Sunset Beach NC, 2 miles inland in a 12 year old home golf, course community. Their lot is 28 feet above sea level. They have refused to leave as have many of their neighbors. I'm at my wits end and this latest run of the euro looks like the nightmare scenario for them. My sisters and I have about half a day to try and convince them, scare them, do whatever we can to get them to gtfo.

Maybe each of you try calling and hamming up a really dramatic goodbye, as if you know you'll never see them again. Crying could only help your case. I know your situation. If my dad was there, he wouldn't leave either. Once, he stuck out a wildfire, standing on the roof with a garden hose as the yard burned around him. But you can't hose a hurricane. Can't do anything except get out of its way.

The winds reported by noaa are so high up in the atmosphere they rarely reach ground level. The surge will have minimal impact at their location. i would leave just due to the likelihood losing electricity for an extended time.

Ugh, this is the thinking mentality of many in these areas, then they scream why aren’t you saving me and risking your life when they are trapped putting more folks in harms way. Society has somehow been put off by inconveniences anymore, not sure why that has changed but it appears to get worse with each passing year. Pretty sure this "scared son" is not concerned with the house being wiped out or injury or death as a direct result of the hurricane itself. The issue is they are both close to 80 yrs old and I believe they have no concept of the prolonged hardship they will face in the weeks following the storm.
