October 2011 General Discussion/Obs

Chicago Storm

Looks like the cooldown is finally going to come wednesday/thursday. We might squeeze out one more 80° F day today.

Gonna be a horrible change going from this weather to cold and wet. No sign of any frozen precip with this system either, just too warm of a cold air mass. Might get 30s and rain though at some point if we're lucky

I think I've figured it out. We tend to outdo other places on days when the airmass across the state is basically the same (no fronts) with lots of sun.

Or the stupid thermometer has a warm bias. :P

But yes you're probably right. Though I will say it tends not to be as "warm" during the summer months.

Probably way too far out in fantasyland to be worth a mention, but the 12z GFS has a system of note about 12 days out, with the critical thicknesses stretching down towards the Ohio Valley. More realistically, we'll probably have to wait until November for a system like this.

You talking about this sexy beast?

Sorry, as I know the majority here love the endless 80's and sunshine, but I'll be kind of glad to shake things up with some "weather" somewhere in the late Wed through Fri timeframe.

Wish I could enjoy it but cold/allergies have been kicking my arse the past few days.

Despite this mild weather, the fall color has exploded faster than I can ever remember. The foliage network even commented on 10/8, "Many of our spotters in Michigan and Wisconsin have reported a sudden explosion of color! In fact, a few have noted that they've never seen anything like this." Took some pics around town today, posted more in the fall color thread. Cant wait to do some state park hiking next week, hopefully with cooler weather.

I can attest to the foliage explosion of late. The trees were green on Monday, now at least one is almost bare already. I take it this is abnormally early for NW Indiana?

In SE PA we don't usually peak until Halloween or so, sometimes the first week of November.

Theres a rumor when trees drop their leaves early, winter is mild and when trees hang on to their leaves late, winter is cold and snowy.

Hmmm, last few winters leaf pickup had to be extended because of late dropping. They were still doing leaf pickup Thanksgiving week ...

Never heard of this. Link?

If autumn leaves are slow to fall, prepare for a cold winter.

http://www.stormfax.com/wxfolk.htm

When leaves fall early,

Fall and Winter will be mild;

When leaves fall late,

Winter will be severe.

This has followed suit the last 3 winters ... leaf collection was extended each year due to trees holding their leaves.

folklore with a sample size of 3 years...oh yeah, we should consider this.

Then Im curious why you went with a warm prediction for last year, if you knew the leaves were dropping late why didnt you predict a cold winter? Seems a bit contradictory.
