October 2011 General Discussion/Obs

Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

Not sure about elsewhere but it's unreal how this month is mirroring October 2008 in terms of temp departures. Below average the first few days, then about 2 weeks above average, then about a week below average, then a few days above and a few days below.

First week of this November looks like a blowtorch too, just like Nov 2008. :o Well, maybe this one won't be as warm.

Thanks...that's crazy. I guess UHI existed back then too...or at a minium, the Fall was very mild up to that point and kept the lake water temp above normal.

That was back when the official OBS site was on the near south side, at Rosenwald Hall (University of Chicago)...so the UHI and lake likely played a role.

I've been thinking the same thing...I'm glad you had the guts to say it :snowman:

Right...this is when you wish there was a consistent "official" site for Chicago...but I know that has been discussed many times already. Regardless, it's hard to believe it took until Nov. 24 to hit freezing at that site. Of course 1930 could have been similar to what's happening at ORD this Fall, i.e. many nights close to freezing but never quite making it.

Torching high temps month.. at least the night time lows the second half of the month made for good sleeping weather and could put the endless ac weather to bed for another 7+ months.

Still a shat load of leaves to come down for the usual late droppers. need a good freeze close to the lake and they will drop like prom dresses.

University of Waterloo Weather Station Summary - October 2011

A hot month that was the third wettest October ever seen

After a really hot start to the month where the temperature was over 10 degrees higher

than average for 3 days, it came down to more of what we would expect for the rest of the

month. The overall temperature was one and half degrees warmer than average which

means we have to go all the way back to March to find a colder than average month.

On the morning of October 23rd at 4:45 am the temperature went below zero for the first

time since the spring and thus the frost free season went from May 1st to October 22nd

this year which is a total of 175 days. This is the longest frost free season since records

began in the region in 1915, just beating out 1941 when they had a stretch of 174 days

above zero.

Even with a dry start to the month, the 114 mm in the next 8 days got us on the way to

the third wettest October since records began in the region. The 141.9 mm we saw this

month was only a little behind the 151.4 mm in 1955, but way back of the 195.4 mm in

1954.

With June and July coming in as the only two drier than average months and a really wet

October we are back talking about how wet 2011 has been. In fact at 941.0 mm for the

year so far, it is the fourth wettest first 10 months on record.

Summary for October 2011:

Maximum Temperature 26.7°C

Minimum Temperature -3.3°C

Average Daily High Temperature 14.1°C (Long term average 13.2°C)

Average Daily Low Temperature 5.0°C (Long term average 2.9°C)

Total Precipitation 141.9 mm (Long term average 67.1 mm)

(Long term averages based on 1971-2000 data for the Waterloo Wellington Airport)
