2026-2027 Fall/Winter Mountain Thread
Tyler Penland replied to BlueRidgeFolklore's topic in Southeastern States
Been pretty calm here in Blowing Rock so far. Only about 1/3" and winds not more than 15-20 m.p.h. -
Hopefully your Texas Longhorns win today to help your spirits!
-
Fantastic forecast, Ray, that was spot on other than being slightly too slow!
-
Me, I badly wanted the shear from the Pacific storm to tear it apart and keep it from getting to TD status. I wanted a whole year without a hurricane, especially without one that hit land.
-
I get it. Its a fine line to walk for the State. Not sure they really want to say "We think this is going to rapidly decay as it hits the mainland". Were there any mandatory evacuations? I think the "disgust" with this storm is more form those wanting chaos than those wanting the best outcome possible imho. Edit: should have used the google machine before posting. There were mandatory evacs.

Fall 2026 Medium/Long Range Pattern Thread

Ya completely agree Jeff hopefully this will be a good drought busting rain despite moving around a lot which is typical with hurricane forecasts yep looks like shorts and short sleeves weather continues ugh . -
I’m glad the expected last minute weakening verified well saving from a MH landfall, but realize getting cat 1-2 H effects is of course still a big impactful event (I know first hand). Interestingly per Dr. Knabb, that same strong shear that caused the dramatic weakening just before landfall actually caused the worst of the thunderstorms/wind gusts (solid cat 2 gusts) to be in your area in the NW eyewall (where Stephanie Abrams great coverage was). It’s almost as if the NW eyewall weakening lagged behind. She said she had never seen so much lightning in an eyewall, which typically has limited lightning due to the upper atmosphere being too warm for as much ice in the clouds vs typically much more lightning in outer bands as Dr. Knabb explained. I thought TWC coverage was excellent between her, Cantore showing storm surge and sudden shift to warming S winds off Gulf in E eyewall, and Dr. Knabb.

Interactive version is nice. My house is in the cone. What time is the Depression going to hit my house? Anyway we got much needed rain after what I'd call a flash drought from Sept. Back to AN temps next week. Shocking!
-
Yep I’m glad the N Gulf finally caught something of a break with this one. Laura, Michael, Ida etc were horrific and broke the pattern of rapidly weakening N Gulf storms as they come in. Of course 2 are dead and hundreds of thousands are suffering with power out and other damage so hopefully things are running again soon.

0.06" here. The guidance has varied so widely for my location I have no idea how much more I'm going to get. Could be nada or could be a couple of inches. RAH has me in the 1 - 1.5" zone which would be much appreciated. Based on persistence the lower end is definitely in play.

Last night was awful. Bad pain and no sleep.

Just started pouring here with gusty winds. - Today

Regardless of strength (I’ve seen Andrew & Michael up close). Unless you have boots on the ground you don’t realize the amount of damage even a storm of this strength can cause. My thoughts are with the many people who are dealing with issues big or small. I can tell you the Emerald Coast got smacked by this. Glass half full thoughts, are the shear and dry air saved us from what could’ve been a monster! .

You are viewing a monthly mean, which is important considering any potential pattern change around that time...but I see some decent ridging out west.

Due to the pressure gradient between Isaias’ remnants and the wedge, along with sig. ongoing rain, together with a secondary astronomical tidal max due to the new moon, the NE winds were long and strong enough to produce moderate coastal flooding in CHS and minor S of there to Ft. Been pouring for the past hr and wind is ripping! -
That what happens when I live on the north side of the mountain in a valley beside the creek.
-
In my area overnight, we got some beneficial rainfall from rapidly N moving scattered convection. Per Cocorahs, there was ~0.75” in the area. I’ll check my gauge later. Winds were brisk but no big deal as expected (highest gusts low 20s). Sun is peaking through. The sun will eventually lead to sig. instability, which will fuel scattered or bands of tstorms this afternoon, some of which could be severe with a couple of tornadoes possible.

Most models show some strengthening of the storm as it approaches our area
-
N Gulf hurricanes that come this way sometimes “wake back up” over our area like Ida which caused more deaths here than anywhere but this won’t be one of them. You can already see it’s sheared apart and won’t be a very coherent system here. Probably a general 1-2” rain like most models are showing.
