Droughts are a normal part of our climate and a healthy way to get rid of excessive vegetation. Droughts normally happen in the summer and sometimes the fall and really aren't anything to be alarmed about. During the 90s I used to water for about 4 hours every other day after I got home from work and found it quite enjoyable and relaxing. Sometimes I just turned the water on and went inside and enjoyed watching the rainbows created by it. Summer is the time to be outside when most people dont want rain unless it's in brief 20 to 30 minute spurts with sunshine 90 percent of the time. We have the other 3 seasons to have rain and cloudy weather lol. I look at 1983 as an example of the kind of year that had everything and would probably make most people happy: a 20 inch snowstorm in February, another snow event in April, a hot and dry record setting summer with 100 in July August and a 99 in September and then back to heavy rain for the Fall. A year with 80 inches of rain but no more than 2 inches in any of the summer months. The reason why summers are supposed to be dry is because we get the vast majority of our rainfall from coastal storms. The abnormal and excessive rainfall we've had recently has polluted our reservoirs so we're getting water restrictions here from too much rainfall. That's in addition to toxic algae blooms caused by farm fertilizer and pesticide run off so people and pets can't go near the water at all.

Holy crap. The Rt. 30 corridor...some areas are approaching 6" if not even more. You are just inside the worst, I'm just outside. I'm perfectly content with the 2" that fell here.

High temperatures are MUCH more comfortable than high humidity. 102 degrees with 20 percent humidity is FAR better than this sauna. But dry heat is normal for July and high humidity is normal for August.

1877-78 was certainly a mild winter region-wide, but the core of the anomalies were in the far upper midwest (ie: MN). Detroit had a 14.8" snowstorm on Jan 31st. Season snowfall totaled 43.4". December and March were very warm, but Jan/Feb only a bit milder than normal and with plenty of winter weather. Locally there were several shittier winters of that era. I wish someone would do a study on the insane weather patterns that gripped this region for nearly a decade worth of winters. The rubber band snap every other year was incredible, unlike anything in the climate record. I still like more or less the 97 NINO myself,as to if we get like 98 again is in question The 2015-16 started in actually 2014,it actually matured faster and was probably to some extent could have been even stronger than this year. The problem in 2015 was the Walker Circulation crapped out which looks to be fairly strong right now to some extent and you see strong trades coming off of SA,so you didnt all the WWB and DWKW like you see in 82-97 and even right now

Was there an actual tornado though? The F2 on Labor Day 1998 was a real tornado that caused real tornado damage.

I know you like saying this but some of us lived through this time period. The 90s had much more sustained and long lasting heat than we do now. I remember 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1999 quite clearly and sustained extreme heat like that has not happened since. And back then I most definitely wasn't running my heat in the summer like I've had to do in the latter half of July this year. In the 90s the only summer I ran my heat was in 1992 the year of no summer thanks to Pinatubo.

Looking at the radar in motion, I don't see how that storm is hitting Brunswick. But there is another line forming in WV moving eastward.

This x10000. The uniqueness of having record breaking warmth on Christmas Day, such as we had in 1982, helps it live on in memories of all who experienced it. Do you remember a random 60-65F day if it was on Dec 11th or Jan 10th? No. But if its on Dec 25th...yes. Also, that winter was extraordinarily snowless here, and bad luck certainly played a roll. After the December warmth, January/February had plenty of days cold enough for snow (tho they were both mild in the mean), it was just dry dry dry. 1982-83 was well on its way to all-time futility until a 7.3" snowstorm on the 1st day of spring, and another 3.4" snow in mid-April, screwed it.
