Don, I may have missed it, but will you please be posting an update to your winter index (the exact term is eluding me) post?  Am curious to see where our area lands currently with last week's storm baked in.

It’s not final, as snow season isn’t finished. I will post it shortly.

Tomorrow will be blustery and cold. After an early morning low in the upper teens or lower 20s, New York City will see the temperature out near freezing. Clouds will increase tomorrow night and cloud cover could impede viewing of the lunar eclipse near sunrise Tuesday. Periods of mixed precipitation giving way to periods of rain is likely later Tuesday and Tuesday night. The temperature will reach the upper 30s and lower 40s.

A sustained warming trend will commence on Wednesday. The second week of March could feature springlike readings. Long Island and coastal sections could be noticeably cooler than interior sections on a number of days on account of a chilly onshore flow.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.2°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.1°C for the week centered around February 11. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.37°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.32°C. Neutral ENSO conditions have now developed. Neutral ENSO conditions will continue through at least mid-spring.

The SOI was +17.10 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.211 today.

That’s why my rule of thumb for tomato planting is Mother’s Day.

.

Remember that month of May, over half dozen years ago that it rained (and was cool) every day in May?

During the cool, wet spell, I potted up my young tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants and kept them in the back of my van, worked like a greenhouse. lol

Hey everyone, i am putting out a call for season-to-date snowfall totals for anyone who has them, including anything that fell today, March 1st.

You can DM me or tag me.

I'll have that seasonal snowfall map out this week, thanks.

Going with 52” in Huntington Station. I’ll go with 0.1” today also, there was a minor coating on colder surfaces.

And it wasn't even that warm. Plus no rain either.  Just the power of the sun

Warmer temps ahead/before and during / after, no protection of a layer of sleet and the sun have eaten 85% of the snowfall here.

Seems like we didnt have a hecs last week. Snowpack is vanishing so fast.

Yep, it was kinda sad in Long Beach actually, snow just disappearing. There was well over 20” there based on the photos I saw and still plenty of piles of course. I think the difference is that up here every night has been below freezing so the melt during the day just ices up. The snow we have here is very dense and glacier like.

Isn’t it great?! A good storm and it will be gone by end of week. And next week we get 60s and 70s!

That’s March 1 sun for you. It’s bad for snow retention in general here near the coast-this year is tops for sure on retention but sooner or later as the sun gets higher in the sky every day it does its thing.

Oh I know and I love it. I hate when gross snow piles stick around. I’ll have my yard back this week for the next 8 months. Couldn’t come soon enough!

I still have a ways to go, probably by the end of the week here. The snow left here is glacier, the snowmelt during the day ices up and freezes into the snow on the ground and makes it bulletproof. It’ll be great when I can hang out on my deck for a while and get some sun.
