Here is my thinking, and I could be totally wrong. This high pressure is very strong. It slowed the moisture a lot. So much so that it has given the pacific moisture time to catch up with the gulf moisture. If you look to the west, the precip looks heavier. The flip side, the CAD came in stronger….and it has set it. This afternoon is going to be a doozie, IMO. Heavy freezing precip.

@Tony Sisk Yea, I agree with that - i guess i meant to say i see how it happens, I just didnt think upper levels would hold through CAD like the lower levels would.  Learn something new every storm...but that low is getting close so one would think the change over is soon - if upper levels hold through this Ill have a new perspective on how powerful CAD can be

Is it possible that the last squal line will be so heavy that it will at least limit the ability of the freezing rain to accumulate?

I would think so...seems lime of those scenarios on the escarpment that if its heavy rain it will be less effective on power outages and if it isn't heavy can probably stay sleet.  We will see

Stayed wintry mix over night mostly, but has been off and on heavy freezing rain with drizzle in between this morning. Adding up fast as are the power outages.IMG_7661.thumb.jpeg.cfba88421366ba9cf11f6586781ce36b.jpeg

One of those shitty but gorgeous pictures

Funny how this went from 10+” of snow to a crippling ice storm to what in all likelihood looks like 1” of sleet with a glaze aka just a travel stopper

Yeah. Your truthful comment made me LOL, as a lot of folks in the Carolinas and GA were put on very high alert this past week by some of the prettiest TV "mets" and the dime-a-dozen hobbyist wx nerds on FB.

Related to your comment and true to form, the DC/MD/VA forum is currently bemoaning their sleetfest resulting in only several inches so far up there, after being forecasted most of this previous week to receive 12-18"....and NoVA (and many others, likely) are about to flip over to ZR within next hour or two. As I've been "burned and learned" over the decades, I now realize..."know your climo."  ;)

I hope I hear thunder with frontal band today, so I can get really excited for the next storm and the snow :sled:within 10 days.

Hear, hear!! Mets have kept the thunder chances in the forecast for our area and continue to emphasize that it's a decent possibility later. Definitely wanting that.

Currently 30/28 here in southern Myrtle, with a heavy drizzle.

I'm in East Cobb, GA near Roswell.  We got below freezing just after midnight.  31 degrees now.  We have 1/8-3/16" of ice that accumulated.  A few small branches down from the wind/ice but nothing major.  Road, sidewalks and driveways are all fine.  It doesn't look like we will get much more before the rain comes in this afternoon.

Laughing at wral trying to spin it that they weren't totally wrong across the board. From crippling ice storm reporting until overnight last night to now still a second wave coming to it likely will be a wintry mix in that second wave to it will be windy tomorrow but there will be no freezing cold Armageddon Tuesday or Wednesday and instead it will approach forty and be sunny.  It never fails living here.

Ive always wanted to hear some ice thunder. I’ve heard snow thunder before and it was awesome.

Im at a balmy 45 degrees in Currituck.  OBX near Hatteras is in low 60s.

Amazed to see the difference between the Southeast nc and northeast nc. From the mid 40's in Elizabeth City to around 30 in Wilmington to 60's at Hatteras to the teens inland.

The Carolinas haven't had a good snow storm since 2018?

They were calling for a half inch of freezing rain or more here while RAH was saying a quarter to a half inch.
