A short rant in here.

It seems like not having a major snowstorm in 5 years wiped all collective snow removal knowledge from some New Yorker brains:

  • People shoveling snow into the street
  • People waiting until after the storm is over to shovel
    • This includes their cars
  • People not clearing snow off the roofs of their cars
  • Crosswalks not getting shoveled
    • If it looks like another storm hits, I'm about to buy a shovel and do it my damn self.

All that said, DSNY has done a good job!

The crosswalks not getting shoveled is bad. In Jersey City, you need to walk onto the actual rails for the light rail to be able to walk safely at Exchange Place.

I wonder how cold this winter has been versus others. It obviously feels cold, but I wonder how relative it is.

.

Because of the 10 day thaw January will be below but not close to one of the coldest overall. Impressive stretch we're in now of course

Both euro and gfs and their AI models have less than 1 in liquid equivalent through the end of their runs….there’s def some hints of possible storms 6-14 hopefully it pans out!

that will be our best shot at more snow just looking at history. then it's time to plan the garden.

Hopefully something pops…. Would hate for last weekend to be the big one, knowing how much cold and potential we have

I like the 6th. Really strong ridge pops out west at that time. Diving shortwave to Miller B transfer perhaps?

Be a man. If you say something, stick with it. Do your time. You promised you'd leave for two weeks. Do it. No one around here will respect you if you stay.

@donsutherland1sorry if I've missed it, but have you done a preliminary run of that winter misery index (for lack of a better term?)  Am really curious how this year is shaping up in that regard.

Per KFRG we're at officially 168 hours since the last time we were above freezing.  It's crazy to think that with a little "luck" it could be Valentine's day before we're above freezing again.  For snow and cold, if that holds true, this seems like it will be among the closest we've come to 1993/1994 that we've seen in terms of snow, snowcover, and cold.

No misery this season. If February can be cold and snowy, Winter 2025-2026 could become a really special winter.
