Respectfully, and I realize that this is OT/Banter, I'm aware that the news was full of stories like this.  However, my husband died in our home on hospice care in August of 2020 (absolutely nothing to do with COVID), and was in and out of the hospital 3 times between May 2020 and August 2020, in his case, the VA hospital in East Orange NJ (because he had VA benefits).  They had COVID restrictions in place, we were not allowed to visit him while in the hospital etc.  He had 3 separate admissions via the ER between the end of May and his passing in August.  The ER was empty or nearly empty all three times we were there and we experienced zero delays in getting care for him, even though his condition was not immediately life threatening from a triage standpoint.  So, I don't know what to say, should I believe the stories I've been told or what my lying eyes saw?  I'm afraid I'm a skeptic.

Today was definitely one of those storms in which the official measuring approach yielded very different results from the average citizen putting a yardstick in the snow after the event.  I have no reason to doubt the official numbers.  I'm just saying that the "average of multiple yardstick measurements" approach for me mid morning as things were tapering down averaged about 18", a far cry from the 2 feet measured officially.

Sometimes I wonder why the yardstick in the snow after the fact isn't the way to go.  If you're going for some consistent measurement of what fell, you might as well go with liquid equivalent before you go with wiping a board periodically, which to me results in a number that means almost nothing to the public.   Even wiping a board is going to be impacted by some compaction, so what's the point?

I wipe the boards once every 24 hours.  For me it's consistently at midnight so it happened that I cleared the boards about mid-way through the storm and added 9" + 8" to total 17".  If the same snowfall distribution had occured in a calendar day instead of crossing midnight, I would have had about 14.5".  I am not particularly comfortable with such random differences.

I had 9" at midnight too.

I decided to look for the famous Kocin/Uccellini Northeast Snowstorms Vols 1 &2 that are often referenced here.  I always assumed that you need a strong meteorology background to have a chance of getting through it, but seeing some excerpts online tonight it seems to be in more layman-friendly language than I expected.  Would having a modest statistics background and reasonable reading comprehension skills be enough to be able to digest these volumes?  From what I saw it seemed doable and very interesting.  Would appreciate any insight.

I have no reason to doubt the Providence numbers one way or the other, but I'd be very surprised if the max depth was even 6 inches within their 38 inch total. 

I actually checked the data there. They had 5 inches depth before the storm started and 21 inch depth at midnight last night. Hmmmm, measuring every hour maybe on a clean board? Even Newark airport 27.2 inches snow, max depth 18 inches. This is why snowfall measurements are somewhat exasperating.

I say 50. By radius I believe that would take you to Newburgh, Toms River, Riverhead LI, and Hackettstown NJ.

Looking at that on a map it should probably be 60.

Not bothering me at all. We had snow on the ground for 3 weeks after the January snowstorm because it was so cold. You wanted us to believe that we could never have a cold winter again. You must be stunned about this winter.

The 21" figure is from 7 am yesterday. This morning's 7 am figure was 39".

Hey just to be clear I meant that all in good fun.  I like the contrarian stuff, it keeps things interesting.  I contribute nothing of value here.

Deleting this app would be great for my mental health, but there are too many good and funny posts I would miss in the darkest, coldest time of the year.
