NWS has ticked the point click down from max temps 105-106 to 101-102 depending on where you are in wake county. Still extreme but not record shattering as originally forecast

This is likely at least partially tied to the hot biased GFS not being as hot as it was (never was believable in the first place due to bias). But still the Carolinas and Virginia are facing a dangerous heatwave and potential records.

100%. They also mention the orientation of the high is such that the worst heat favors the mid Atlantic in today’s AFD whereas some previous runs had it centered further SW. Multiple days of 100+ degree heat seem inevitable tho and it will certainly be a dangerous heat wave, but explicitly putting all time record highs in the forecast over the weekend definitely led to more scrutiny over the forecast. I had never seen 106 forecast for my area or 3 days straight of at least 105 as it had until yesterday

In some ways the NE does heat better than us. Greensboro has reached 100 only in 5 of the last 50 summers (12 days total). Boston has hit 100 in 9 of those years (9 days total)

One record to watch for RDU (and likely other sites) is the record for longest consecutive streak of 100+ degree highs. Current record from 2012 is 6 days. NWS is forecasting 5 straight 100+ days at the moment (100, 102, 102, 103, 100) but Tuesdays high will be dang close at 98 (and we know 2 degrees above forecast is just a casual Tuesday for the RDU sensor).

My point click is now showing a high of 106 tomorrow. I’m. Little skeptical of that

I noticed the bump up as well this morning. I am a bit surprised by that. Also Falls Lake as expected is in free fall again. It has about 3 feet to drop before reaching the all time record low level.

Round 2 in 10 days?

Once again the GFS (6Z) is way too hot in the extended. Even if H5 reaches the near record high upper 590s as it has, highs on July 14-15th will not reach anywhere near as hot as this shows even with the drought:

6Z GFS July 14th highs: for example 112 at SAV is loltastic as that’s compared to the 105 all-time hottest on record there back 155 years!

6Z GFS July 15th highs: also not going to happen

Either way this is horrible that the heat will continue to plague us for this long.
