1997 was a nice summer. There hasn't been a summer at New York City within 1F of it since 2009 (by mean temperature). By contrast, 1996 was even cooler, 1992 was nearly 1F cooler, and 2000 was cooler. So it's not like the 90s and early 2000s were wall-to-wall hot. And this is using the Central Park record, which has recent summers generally somewhat cooler than most observational sites around NYC.

There's a couple of other ones like that-- look up 2004 and 2014.

These are typically very rainy summers, that's the only way to keep the temperatures down here.

1992 had a strong Pinatubo influence.  The summers surrounding it were historically hot (both 1991 and 1993).  1994 and 1995 were also very hot.  After 1996 and 1997 we had hotter summers again in 1998 and especially 1999.

It basically went something like this

1990- moderately hot

1991- historically hot

1992- Pinatubo cooled

1993- historically hot

1994- early historically hot

1995- historically hot

1996- cool but very humid

1997- cool

1998- moderately hot

1999- historically hot

2000- cool

2001- cool

2002- historically hot

2003- cool but very humid (and a big black out on the hottest day)

2004- cool

2005- hot but onshore flow meant no extremely hot days

and then july happens and the dewpoint is 78

I'm willing to find a way to drain the gulf of mexico to get rid of that humid crap. That would put an end to damaging hurricanes down there and violent severe weather outbreaks too.

the dry heat of a westerly wind is much better.

A dramatic warmup is underway. The temperature will soar into the 80s tomorrow. The temperature could reach the hottest levels so far this year on Thursday. Parts of the region could reach 90° for their first time this year. Temperatures will remain above normal into the weekend when high temperaturss will return to the 70s.

Showers and thundershowers are possible during the weekend.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +0.2°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.2°C for the week centered around May 21. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.08°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.08°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely continue through at least mid summer.

The SOI was +4.57 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +1.693 today.

2001 had one of the warmest 5 day periods from Aug 6 - 10th.

2005 was very hot in other parts of the region , NJ had 3-4 days in the 100s and a very sustained hot streak in Jun.

98 was on the cooler side each of the 3 months Ju-Jul-AU

1987/1988 were both very hot, 1989 near even.

true, and a high of 103 in August in 2001, something that has very rarely happened.  Besides that day, I think there's been only one other time NYC has hit 100 in August in my life and that was in 1983.
