Started out as rain in NYC in morning, around 35-36 degrees too. Then started slushy snow/sleet mix around 1 PM, and light snow through evening. Moderate snow around 9 pm or so, then heavy snow all night and wind gusts to 40 mph all night. Solid 12-13” blizzard over here. Only time in my life I’ve seen a rain to snow storm produce so much. There have been a few early season rain to snow storm, but usually only a few slushy inches here. This one was moderate rain to an all out blizzard. Amazing

Still my biggest storm of all time. I ended up with 35 inches.

35 miles east of me in Danbury it rained much of the storm and I think they ended up with around  a foot. NYC with 21 inches.

I think I had 28”, it’s the biggest for me too but that snow though…a heavy wet mass with destroying power. Speaking of power, I was down for almost 4 days with that storm, bought a generators after that fiasco.

It was 20 years ago today (Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play)... the February 2006 snowstorm:

20 years.

I recently re-mapped this storm and included a new map for the lower northeast with climate sites on it. I have a full radar loop and bunch more stuff up on our site.

Since you know where I am on this map you can see what I'm not a fan of this storm as it was disappointing IMBY.

lol.

can't win em all

I'm sure a lot of NYC folks would feel the same about Mar 2017...even Dec 2003 it looks like around your area did very well compared to the city. That storm blew chunks here. Dry slot city. Orange county definitely got some of the goods that storm.

It's probably the only time in my long weather memory that New York City, specifically Central Park, had a high measurement, some might call it accurate which in itself is a minor miracle, compared to most of the surrounding area.

The reason for it, Paul Kocin was on top of them that entire storm for the measurements because he thought it might break the single storm record total, which it eventually did. Of course to later be topped by the 2016 blizzard.

So what's your memory of the events of 2016? Initially the record wasn't broken with 26.8" and after 2 or 3 months they changed it to 27.5" based on surrounding obs and radar. Didn't that storm shake up measurement guidelines for the city and the guy doing official measurements get replaced or something?

Great archives page!  Saved as a favorite.

Thanks i never made a post about it here but you can read about it here. There's also a website updates page to see what's new every week, it's always a continual work in progress. 25-26 storms are being updated in near real time on the dedicated page for it.

Not really, peope were just happy to see any type of snow in March 2017. It pretty much saved the season. Without it, 2016-17 would have been just another BN snowfall season to go along with a torch winter.

It's a loaded question. I will answer it in detail when I have more time later tonight.

The front end on 12/5 produced for almost everyone north of I-195 and there was so much optimism for the next day when it became the big coastal storm, but like you said it was like Swiss cheese with winners and losers. In Long Beach it was okay to decent but it could’ve been way better had the Swiss cheese holes not happened.

That's 64 days in a row by my count.

I didnt start tracking snow coverage days until 2016/17.  I had 85 days total that year which is still my highest in the last ten. I'm at 61 days for this season so we've got a shot, but we need another storm or two.

The Blizzard of February 11, 1983 was 43 years ago this past Wednesday  I'm reminded of it every year on the Friday preceding the February school winter break, because that's when it hit.  Came in like a wall on LI in my location by 12:30 PM.  By 2PM school was letting out early.  For anyone in elementary school like me, our only memory of really big snow til then was quite hazy memories of the Blizzard of 78.

Still remember my dad, as well as my elementary school teacher, telling us with barely-contained grins that morning that we'd only be getting 2-5" tops. Might have been the first time I heard the term "out to sea."  That aged poorly as they say.  Even after being let out early from school - imagine the chaos in a time before cell phones -- the forecast had been upped only to 8-10.  While that was incredible to read on the Weather Channel ticker, it wasn't even close to the 16" we measured by ruler the next morning (so by the official method it might have been an additional inch or two).  Even if it was just 16", it might as well have been 1,000.  We'd gotten so little over the preceding years other than the 8" in the April blizzard the previous year, which this of course dwarfed.

What a great storm.  The week that followed had a lot of mild days.  Spent days outside building and maintaining forts across the street from each other, having massive snowball fights, wearing hoodies and no coats.  Actually ended up with a combo of wind and sunburn by the end of the week.  Who knew it would be 13 years before we'd see anything like it again.
