Almost got Powerballed today, but did touch 90° at FWA for a short period. Hoping for some overnight boomers, but it looks like they'll slide northeast of MBY.

A lightning bolt hit a tree about 50 ft. from me about 25 years ago. I was holding an umbrella and felt the tingling from my hand up to my shoulder. Scared the crap out of me.

Anyone ever been struck by lightning before ?? Or had a close call?? Today with the first front of storms I experienced a very close strike. So close that I heard and felt the streamer just before the strike. It sounded just like a Tesla coil over my head.

My neighbors house was struck a while back. I had fire coming thru some of my electrical outlets. Fried most of them. Smell of burnt plastic lingered for days. I'll never forget the sound though. Woke me from a dead sleep and was the loudest thing imaginable.

Glad you're ok man.

I had a very close call about 10 years ago. Was in Waukegan and a friend and I had just got down bowling. It was already pouring down rain when we went out side with some lightning in the distance. While we were running out to my truck a lightning bolt hit the parking lamp post right above us. Extremely loud when it hit the metal - we could hardly hear for several minutes. Ringing in our ears lasted a good half hour! Smelled the ozone produced by the strike as well.

Lol, at Alek's typo.

No disagreement there. And we had full hazy sunshine through midday to tote (another thing that's been rare on days with t'storm potential).

Plus, our high of 89 occured in the noon hour which is pretty dang impressive for early September. I bet we would've made a run for hottest day of the year if not for the storm action.

Still pouring rain here but it looks like Downtown Detroit-Mt. Clemens is getting the brunt of some training action right now.

Our weather tower netted some pretty cool obs as a decent, slow moving non-severe storm passed through here around 4PM. There were several lightning strikes within a mile of my location on campus, and it was cool to watch for almost an hour on my building's roof as the cluster of pulse storms slowly moved in from the north...we watched three cores go up and then down until we finally got hit. A decent core sat 2-3 miles NE of my location with VIL ranging from 50-70 kg/m^2 and tops from 40-50k feet for almost 20 minutes, so there was likely some small hail and even stronger winds just NE of campus...and there was definitely a lot of lightning in that direction. All in all not too shabby for being under a death ridge in early September.

I never have been personally struck, but my old house had a tree in our yard get struck twice in the 20 years I lived there, and one of the houses on my block was struck by lightning in probably about 2002 and there was a major fire because of it. Thankfully no one was injured.

As far as close calls go, I got caught outside in an open area in a nasty thunderstorm at the 2005 International Freedom Festival in Downtown Detroit. At one point, my hair was starting to stand straight up. You know what that usually is the precursor to, which scared the crap out of me.

Getting a fair amount of CTC lightning and thunder, but just south of the heavier rain now (it was a deluge 15 minutes ago). It's moving back in though.

Such a great summer night. Awesome observations.

Models are advertising some decent directional shear here for Friday, as the upper level shortwave sort of closes off and drifts westward.

There's very little wind shear to work with and it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but as we know, a whole lot of wind shear certainly isn't needed to get rotating updrafts or even tornadic activity.

A little funny snippet from APX. I think this is the same forecaster that's been bitching about the crappy string of winters they've had up there.

He should probably request a transfer at this point.

One more lightning story.  I was fishing a bass tournament and my partner and I were on some good fish, but a storm was quickly rolling in.  I was looking at my partner as I made a cast as we were discussing taking shelter and I didn't hear my bait splash.  I looked around and my line was suspended in midair in an arch and the bait was slowly drifting to the surface.  I've never started my boat and took off so fast in my life. We beached under a nearby bridge just as the storm hit with numerous very close CG's.

FWA got 89'd Wednesday, touched 90 yesterday and the point calls for 90 again, while IND is shooting for their third 90 in a row today.

Gonna be a DLL special today.
