Western heat wave

Chinook

Recommended Posts

Post observations and discussions of the heat wave in the Western US. For a couple of days now, I have seen discussions that Las Vegas could come close to its all time record high of 117.  Death Valley temperatures could be an interesting topic.

My post from the Mountain West thread:

I wonder if Death Valley will come within a few degrees of their World record of 134

Death Valley

SUNDAY: Sunny and hot, with a high near 129.

I cannot believe LAS has never topped 117 F. Definitely some sites in the Plains that have outdone that by several degrees.

Interested to see if Furance Creek (DV) can pull off any 100 F low nights.

Yeah, but how many of those sites are above 2100' like Vegas is?

Minden, NE is one exception at 2172' with an all-time record high of 118 in 1936 (Dust Bowl), but there aren't many of them!

I was working for an evil French company in Monahans, Texas in June 28, 1994 when Midland-Odessa hit 118ºF and Monahans hit 120ºF.

Monahans is 2621' ASL.  Odessa is 2900'.  Per Wiki

This link with state records says Monahans is 2547'

ETA

Late June 1994 was a hot one,  Laughlin, NV tied that state's all time record at 125ºF on June 29th.

Fair point. I forgot that they're about twice the elevation of PHX, which has definitely hit 120.

Still, it looks like both SD and NM have state records in excess of 120 F on the High Plains above that elevation. ND is close, too (1900 ft).

It must be all that evaporational cooling from those man-made golf courses and sprinklers in Vegas then.  :P

Never golfed in Monahans, but I was told by several town golf course lightly oils the 'greens' to separate them from the fairway.

Not much transpiration in Monahans.  There is a species of oak tree, the Harvard Oak, that grows in the sand, at maturity, the trees are less than 3 feet tall, but have roots that can exceed 90 feet.

In June 1994, both Death Valley and Lake Havasu hit 128F June records for AZ and the US. Tucson at 2200" hit 117F in June 1990 which was a similar heat wave to 1994 and now. PH hit 120 in 1990 and 122F in 1994. Sierra Vista at 4500" has a record of 108F. A high of 129F at DV before June 30 would be a new US record high for June.

Apparently Las Vegas ties the record at the airport, although how much has it built up around that site since it became the official site for the city. I'm finding several sites just SW of the city that didn't crack 110 yesterday.

Interesting question about how much UHI really affects a desert environment.  Elevation is huge also, so that there are different temps not far away doesn't mean a ton.

That second link is for Stovepipe Wells, a different station from Furnace Creek?

I'm pretty sure Stovepipe Wells is the Climate Reference Network site that NOAA set up almost 10 years ago.  The other reading is probably the normal coop-like site that the Park Service records.

Apparently its quite significant.

Anyhow, it hit 117 at the airport regardless. The air-mass responsible probably wasn't as hot as the previous record setting day, but the infrastructure most likely put it overboard. Splitting hairs I guess.
