Marquette snow depth 35"...previous record for this date was 18" (1996, 1972), next highest is 10" (2008).

it dropped a few feet just over the weekend and it was cold..   60's and sun with nights above freezing will wipe it out fast.  that area gets pounded with sun

Most of the top layer probably melted into the middle layers.... It's probably 50 inches of crust right now.

I think the fresh fluff just consolidated.  If someone decides to plow the path again it will get deeper once more..

 

I think I might drive up there and rent a piece of equipment to move the pile outside the cam view.  That's the only way I have a chance of my May 9th prediction verifying.

Laurium Glacier is the real deal this yr..wow.   John Dee runs a contest every for when it will melt..  This baby (snow drift) is pushing 20 feet still this yr he said.  Can it make it until June?  I wouldn't even know what to guess.

Holy ****!  That looks like something you'd see hiking in the Cascades.  Nice cornice! 

 

They tell you to avoid walking or skiing below a cornice like that as that's where unstable wind slab snow builds up and triggers avalanches.  That's if you're on a mountain slope.

Wow, it is really cooking up there! 52° at 4:20pm. The top of the snow resembles what you see on mountain slopes in the high country in early summer.

Is that an official measurement or based on the thermometer? Earlier it was showing 50 and Houghton was reporting 38.

I would think a couple tree days of 60+ would turn that 50" of crust in to a huge bowl of mashed potato's ready to get devoured by an army on Thanksgiving.

 

If the models fail and or the mixing blows for this weekend in to early next week then I'll start to rethink there could be more than a trace left on May 9th.   Otherwise I can't dismiss the power of the late april  in to may sun strength.  I see what it can do fast in late Feb and early March on my area's that get sun torched like the twin lakes cam.

 

Anyways its crazy we are even having this thread so late and it sure is fun to get us over the boring stretches of spring as we wait for summer fall and winter.

Once the snow melts on this cam, I'll probably vanish for a few months... Summer weather is quite uninteresting to me. Maybe, maybe not.

I do like to check in though if severe wx is forecasted close by to our great lakes members down to LAF... But severe weather,  more than a couple hundred  miles away or so interest me about as much as midget porn.  I can't believe the NFL draft is already this weekend..  it won't be long and we'll be saying the same thing about July 4th and so on..  I love how summers fly by with so much more going on.

I'm changing my vote to "never".

I've got a lot planned this Summer.  It's going to be fun. That said, I await the days in August when the shortened days first become noticeable and the hints of Autumn begin to appear.  Winter weather this time of year just doesn't fit. Time to embrace Spring/Summer.

I'm just enjoying watching all the birds ****.

Wow. The most I've measured on flat ground, with an actual stick/measuring tape is 7 feet. (That was definitely not in my backyard.) I am assuming that is about 10 ft above the person's foot. Does the terrain go up?

 

 

Here is what John Dee has to say about the location and such.

 

With all the snow and winds from that last storm, I though it would be interesting to see how the Laurium Glacier was doing. So we all drove down there this afternoon, but I decided to take my snow shoes along. In all the pictures I have ever taken of it, there has never really been an object to give a good reference as to the true size of it. So I strapped on my snow shoes and walked out to the edge of the drift and Nora snapped this shot of me standing in front of The Laurium Glacier. No joke folks, it really is that big. Here is a shot taken a little further back to show the entirety of it. Keep in mind that I an standing on around 6-7 feet of snow as well. I would estimate its depth to be somewhere in the 18-20 foot range. What makes it so amazing is that it is ALL natural. Snow humans moving snow into the spot, or buildings to drift around. Its just a huge drift at the end of a field, along side the road and it forms to gigantic proportions every year. For anyone thinking they might like to head over there and pull a cornice drop, forget about it. You would have to travel into private property to do that.
