  1. Last spring was a disaster. We were having cold, seriously cold, rains in May. I didn't plant until June, and that's really late for me. As an aside it was the best year I've ever had for sweet banana peppers, my freezer is stuffed with them. Picked em right up until the first hard frost in Nov.
  2. Thanks for the breakdown. Always appreciated.
  3. How much forward Anthony? I've come to suspect any models that keep pushing the cold 6-10 days away.
  4. I'm sure something will pop up, just hope it isn't a nearly 3 month wait between snows like last year. Overall in terms of snow last year was close to a stinker IMBY, as was the year before. However, a blockbuster winter is probably not likely. We'll know more in a few weeks.
  5. Hard to disagree, but in truth rather depressing.
  6. Science absolutely helps drive public policy, and in a big way. From anti-smoking campaigns to the food pyramid to exercise recommendations and the dangers of mercury and lead paint, science drives public policy. Problem is, public policy is often too slow to implement changes in a timely fashion. For example, we know teenagers need more sleep than others, and have known this for a long time. Yet schools are only now realizing they should be starting the school day later. We also know that feeding children in school improves outcomes. Yet policy makers argue about this....absolutely no disrespect intended here, you are highly regarded for good reason in these parts.
  7. Agreed. It's tempting to get baited in by these things. Like I said, we all need some interesting weather to talk about. Have fun on your trip. Yeah, we need a snowstorm. Even a little one at this point...
  8. It doesn't, but people with higher IQ's tend to acquire them both and more quickly and easily than others. IQ tests actually measure these areas. In fact, it would be very hard to score a higher IQ at the full scale if you couldn't recognize "common sense" or had limited worldly experience. Take this common question from the most used test; What would you do if you saw smoke coming from a window? Answer; call the fire dept. And next? Go get help ( or some variation ). Some kids will stop at call the fire dept; one we tested said he would just let the professionals handle it. Wrong answer.
  9. Yeah I don't trust anyone too friendly with Russia either. Sorry, Unc, I couldn't resist that one; ya gift wrapped it for me. But you know I luv ya brother.
  10. So you don't really have the truck....
  11. It's the boring mild weather....we need a storm to talk about. Gotta admit, it was nice hiking in the morning, will be even nicer this afternoon. It was cool but with little wind, I was getting toasty...
  12. Sanders is not a communist. He is a Democratic Socialist, running as a Democrat ( though I don't think he should be, just my opinion, as he never identified as one ). There is a communist party in the US. They have their own candidates. There is also a socialist party. They too run their own candidates. They do not always make it to every ballot though.
  13. I have been in education for 31 years. Today's students are among the brightest I have ever seen.
  14. What exactly will happen due to climate change is open for discussion, but its existence as fact is not. Always side with the facts. If politicians actually did this, we'd be a much happier world. But I think we should all take this to the climate section, or feel the wrath of the moderators. TBH, it doesn't belong here. Slow weather week.We are all bored with it, I get that.
  15. Facts are not debatable. I studied history as an undergrad. We had our share of deniers there too. One does not debate with them.
  16. You give us hope, old friend; helps us through the tough times....
  17. As one trained in the social sciences I find it very sad, because science is not liberal or conservative. Ecological issues should not be a matter of wedge issue politics, it's bad for all of us.
  18. Thank you. Facts, in the words of John Adams, are stubborn things. You're at Fordham IIRC?
  19. Denial is strongly linked to a tribal identity with a particular segment peculiar to the United States. There is no point in arguing with these folks. It is like trying to convince someone to convert to another religion.
  20. Without us it does not happen so rapidly. Which means we have the ability to change it. But some people find that inconvenient.
  21. You can make a lot more money spewing drivel if you take it from the energy cartel, way more than the paltry stipends real, peer reviewed scientists get. The Pentagon and the insurance industry sure don't think its a hoax, and those are some mighty serious people. The facts are true whether you believe them or not. If the doctor says you have a disease, you don't have to believe it. But it will not change the diagnosis.
  22. Sorry, but I do not argue about established facts.
  23. No, the writer says they can't be sure without more study. And that's the case. But I think we all suspect climate change has a lot to do with it. It would have been nice for the reporter to ask a few climatologists to weigh in. But they probably would have said the same thing, we can't know for sure etc. Still, you quote the experts....that's what I learned in journalism.
