  1. I'll not be surprised in the least if, by the time the storm rolls around, it won't look like much to talk about.
  2. That's really the kiss of death. Ain't got a prayer with strong southerly winds.
  3. You're a bit further north and probably change over a little later in these set ups. So you might do alright ( in this winter 3-4 is alright ).
  4. Thought so. The city itself and just west haven't had a good dump in awhile. Jan '18 was decent in the city but just west it was a struggle. And once you get into March the big snows leave us alone, at least a sea level. 8-10 inches is a real success, and doesn't happen that often. But I know plenty of folks that think we get way too much snow and if they never saw another flake they would be thrilled. They, too, are living in the wrong part of the country....
  5. I'd go with the most knowledgeable posters here; this is likely 1-3 and then rain. I can only remember one of these that delivered close to 8, and that was in 2008 during a two winter snow drought....these storms often flip over fast.
  6. I question some of those numbers; I am just west of SI. No way we had 43 in 2009; 2013 was just about average. 2015, 2017 and 2018 are also off. These seem like LI numbers maybe?
  7. That Feb one actually delivered for us out my way...the big show was in March though.
  8. Seen many of these; sometimes we eke out 3 inches before it turns over to rain. I usually clean the driveway just for the heck of it, but in truth it is all almost always gone by the time the storm exits, depending on how much rain and warm air there is.
  9. We have hope. It's cold again today, though it is supposed to warm up Wed again.
  10. Never did I say that Adirondack Park climate was like NYC or even Dutchess County. Just reporting an observation. In fact the post is implicit that it isn't. NYC is not the worst place for snow in the region either; parts of it aren't, parts of it are ok. The coastal regions aren't, but the Bronx and even parts of SI sometimes do better than the rest of the city.
  11. Yeah but the weather is different in there in terms of snow. ANd further north, my son is at Adirondack park doing research and there is snow OTG up there, I guess there is all winter....that really is upstate and higher elevation....But I always considered Dutchess county part of the area..
  12. Can you put this into laymen's terms please. I think I can figure it out; you mean to say there isn't any big cold shot or snow coming any time soon. And beware the ides of March?
  13. Going to feel like a shock after these past few days, supposed to make a run into the mid 50's Wed. I hope the cold gets here soon.
  14. Some of those cities are not big snow locations; Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City...when my late grandparents came from IN to visit my mother and father in the 50's they were shocked at some of the Newark area snowfalls.....
  15. Excellent photos Don. Did you use a phone for these? It's amazing how clear photos are today. Back in the day I had to wrestle with 35mm and take rolls of film to get maybe one good shot of a guy holding a fish....did a few covers for The Fisherman. Never was much of a photographer. Or anything else, really....
  16. There are trails locally that never reopened because they couldn't clear all the trees. Walking paths I had used for a decade were blocked. Some of those dead trees are rotting away enough to walk some of those areas again. I'll never forget the local mall parking lot filled with timber, and the local parks filled with mountains of wood chips.
  17. Possibly due to the same things that caused the dustbowl; interesting topic for a dissertation. But it can't be right, as my parents grew up in the 30's and they always told me they walked miles uphill in the deep snow with holes in their shoes to get to school.
  18. I don't think so Ant. The super warm temps have got everyone pessimistic. Get us some cold and a few inches, even after a front end dump that turns to rain, and people will fell better about things.
  19. Snowfall has been unimpressive since 2016 IMBY. Many of the other storms since were misses out here, some by quite a lot.
  20. I do....saw a lot of them. Never with this much warmth and so sustained though. 80's were paltry, but not this warm.70's weren't great either. And neither were most of the 90's. We've had a good run from 2001-2016, with a few lean years in there. Been meh ever since for a lot of us.
  21. think you mean 2014/15, the winter of the nickel and dime events which totaled 50 some inches.....15/16 was one big storm in Jan. and one small one in Feb.
  22. None of us really knows, not even the most diligent scholars of this stuff, but I would never bet against any snow in the metro area this early. By the end of Feb I might make the bet, but the last two years I would have lost...
  23. Did some garden work today. Still have fresh herbs going strong, thyme, rosemary, and some other stuff my wife planted, maybe sage. Have creeping charlie invading the pots. Still not the tomato seedlings I had growing in Dec 2015, but close enough. Blueberries started budding. All very disorienting. Looks like winter will return shortly according to people here. we'll see.
