i'm just across the river and iirc the bands just refused to cross.....about 6 inches here what a disappointment compared to areas south and east.
-
its winter; there is always a slight risk of heavy snow.
-
laughing my butt off. some funny stuff here tonight. we need a storm....
-
my understanding is the storm can phase too far east or north....seen that more than a few times.....jan 2015, march 2001....they were still good storms, just not for us....i did get 7 inches in jan 2015 though, and 6 in feb 2013, which felt like a win after that winter....if those were miller b's....
-
its a message board; don't take it personally. you'd probably be friends in the real world, because there aren't many out there who enjoy snow....not in these parts.
-
i simply would not want to live in such a place. there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. 4-8 is about right.
-
but so are miller b's....we can miss the phase....right?

went fishing there a couple times back in 90 and 91. i've heard the epic man made salmon runs are largely a thing of the past in most of the lakes, as the invasive alewives themselves could not survive the lakes. efforts are underway to restore natural fisheries, though iirc ontario did have salmon at one time, unlike the other lakes. the fishing i saw there did not make me want to go back, i'll say that. but i was fishing with a bunch of amateurs.....i had read a recent book on the lakes and there is a documentary out there i saw, i've always been fascinated by these huge freshwater seas.....even this photo does not impart the sheer vastness of the lake....

think the jan 2005 blizzard was a clipper type system; it was a big snow but not on the level of others, though it did hit cape cod really hard. around 12-18 in most of the region; cold and all snow.
-
we don't need a ku; they are rare anyway. we just would like some events. 3-6 is fine.
-
what makes you think your wife would approve?
-
even that year produced one really decent storm in feb.
-
but further north like in new england it was snow; i think there was a roof collapse but i may be getting it confused with 2003, an almost as impressive storm, though in retrospect it was not as big. it was the second time in my life to see such a storm, bigger than anything in the 70s or 80s....and the storms we would go on to see....i'm getting too old to deal with megastorms anymore, but wouldn't mind a return to a 2014 or even 2021 scenario....

gas remains low in price. you are paying more because utilities are upgrading pipelines and infrastructure and passing the costs on to you. only about a third of your bill pays for gas, 2/3 pays for other costs. in fact, utilities do not make money on gas, but all this other stuff. source; npr, morning edition, oct 12, 2025.

it was common in the 90s to see extended mild temps. with a few years exceptions, obviously
-
too large really, with too many differences....i mean parts of pennsylvania are considered nyc metro region. even very big storms like jan 2018 can be negligible just 90 mins up the parkway....
-
winter was done by feb 1st. best we could do was an ice storm and a rain noreaster that downed power lines. but it was an epic four weeks....
-
i would not bet against more snow this winter, meaningful snow at that....
-
no....my son did, but he had covid. he got on paxlovid right away and it kicked the virus' ass. he's also vaxxed.
-
how would that help misery? florida is a miserable place. folks had a home there for many years. never could stand it.
-
family dealing with both covid and flu, and daughter getting over unidentified throat infection she had on and off for a month; it took 3 rounds of antibiotics and steroids; she lost her voice too. yet the throat scope with a camera showed hardly anything; all tests were negative and they went after them all, viruses, strep, you name it. i won't mind a few days of warmer conditions so my hands will stop bleeding and i can sleep at night without itching all over from dryness.....then i'll be ready for some more snow, and i don't care what the teleconnections say, so far this winter has snowy written all over it. we'll see.

a colleague had a photo of his grandfather standing on the ice next to the old orchard lighthouse, washed away by Sandy in 2012, and his great grandfather went out during the blizzard of 1888 and was never seen again.

good question, but heating systems are more efficient today. intresting is that a mechanic told me today's boilers and furnaces are only good for about 10 years; he said its not your dad's old furnace that lasted 40 years....
-
i couldn't see it; i went out during one of the dry slots and that was it. went to bed watching the revolutionary war series, turn. kinda slow, though jamie bell is a fine actor. woke up to do my morning walk and was surprised to see i had to dig out first. and it is still snowing lightly. gonna get some photos with the christmas decorations still up, though we had to ditch the inflatables with all the wind this year; that stuff just isn't good for these parts. i do remember telling my wife that damn snow plow keeps passing by and waking me up, what gives? then i went back to sleep.

something unusual happened...we got an end dump instead of a front end thump....when i saw RU talking about bands last night i figured meh...woke up to around 3 in on top of a firm sleet base, making for a picturesque winter day that requires plowing; the plow guy came by a lot last night, wish he'd done that the last storm where we had nearly 7 in...still i was very disappointed last night, but like the feeling you get when your team pulls off a last second tie in a soccer match, it feels like a win even if it wasn't....and hey its only december....i know we're supposed to have a front loaded winter that sucks, but if i knew nothing else, i'd say we are on track to see some more of this in the upcoming weeks. til the next my friend....
