  1. i don't do tog anymore.....something has happened with that fishery. back in the day you could catch a mess of them, i used to fish under the verrazzano.....the block island sound fishery is a good one though, but these limits, jeebus....guys are eeling bass already up here, but those are resident river bass. gotta see what shakes out after this storm; my guess is inshore is kaput; but it might get those stripers moving our way. going to dinner now for some porgies and sea bass, the last of our catch earlier in the week. see you out there, cap....
  2. there's always a power sailer......sailing ain't my thing, and i wouldn't ever step on a boat at all if i could catch enough fish from shore. up in maine i can, and do, right from the dock. tried taking a canoe out. well, you should learn how to do it before you try. thank god the water was warm.....
  3. i'm old enough to remember the edmund fitzgerald loss in lake superior....35 foot waves at one point, with computer simulations showing some 46 foot waves.....she either got swamped or had a structural failure. a sister ship reported a " three sisters" set of waves that passed over them and headed in the fitzgerald's direction....3-4 foot is enough to scare me....raritan bay gets those short chops and we got stuck in one last summer during a thunderstorm, went from flat to evil in about 10 minutes. i'm getting too old for that.....the local captains seem worried about this storm. that should tell us something.
  4. wow.....i was thinking to sneak out tomorrow before the storm, 5-10 northeast...now i'm reading 10 and then southeast....i'm not getting suckered again, it's lonely out there this time of the year. looked at the party boats, they reported a 'solid pick ' in other words not that great. not spending a fortune to go out there. hate to see the season end so early. it's a long time til may. you get 6-9 rollers in the sound whatever fish are around are going to head to sea. i don't remember these early storms back in the day; we had a nice long fall season. now we get these offshore storms back to back and then go into coastal rains. we used to actually have winter fisheries, whiting, mackerel. all gone. so, time to start thinking about winter, hope its not a boring one.....
  5. you can pack your rods up for the winter after this one. unless you striper fish. anything inshore isn't hanging around after this. will bring in a ton of spiny dogfish though.
  6. we used to drive out to montauk back in the day, 40 years ago. had a lot more energy back then.
  7. not sure the power station ramp, at soundview, is open to the public. i tried to call around, but got nowhere. problem is there is also no easy way to even drive to long island...it's like there's this big bottleneck called nyc in the way.....i've driven to city island and new rochelle on the other shore to fish the boats there, but a 45 min ride at 5 am turns into a 3 hour ride at 4 pm. my son interned in the bronx zoo in grad school and told me there is just no easy way around this.
  8. everything i've seen says expect below normal....
  9. thanks very much for that. we did hit the jersey shore sunday and well, it wasn't good. a dozen black sea bass and 4 porgies; all but two of the fish would have been shorts in new york waters. but it was only a two hour ride as opposed to 3.....the full moon does not help fishing; in 40 years i've never done well in either a full or new moon. we went because the weather was just too good to ignore, however there were still a lot of swells out there, and they built up with tide change; enough that you could not see a nearby boat when one came up. motion sickness alert....wind changed at the end of the day, blowing in massive plumes of red water.....i don't know if this was from the offshore storms or was plankton...never saw it before.
  10. are there any boat ramps around there; i mean we are tired running the east river....
  11. i agree, but those under 20s have beaten france at that youth world cup twice now and tied them once. i still think with the right coach the boys could make a deep run; they have some incredible players on the senior team, but the team just isn't gelling the way they did 20 years ago. france generally outhustles other teams, something they have trouble with the usa at that youth level. tomorrow looks like a good day to hit the open seas. probably too nice to catch anything! jersey boats loaded up on the sea bass today and the big roll from the storm is finally over. won't get many chances to fish out there in small craft as we get into the month. those northerlies can really blow....already seeing some stripers in the raritan and saw birds working in the sound, seen a lot of guys anchored by those rockpiles, not sure what they are targeting, blackfish isn't open yet. we are at the mercy of the weather.....gotta take advantage.
  12. it's too bad because there are a pile of porgies out there; of course ny has long had ridiculously high size limits on everything else, i mean we have caught maybe hundreds of sea bass which would be legal in most states but ny has a ridiculous size of 16.5 inches....weakfish are also silly at 16....and one fish....3 on the sea bass. it's just ridiculous and its why there aren't many people fishing anymore. but they are coming for the porgies too; this year nj closed the season til sept 1st, didn't matter because there are few there anyway, and the little fish are all over the fish markets. matter of time before it's one or two fish at some draconian size limit. it's already tough at 11 inches. probably caught over a hundred on some trips, like 90 percent shorts. we'll hit the shrewsbury rocks off nj next. easier run for us, but less room for wind errors.....raritan bay is of course dead. has been for years now. gonna get the most out of this weather anyway. cheers. by the way iirc you are a soccer fan; watched the under 20 us men dismantle france 3-0 the other day. all in the last five minutes. incredibly, they have done this before, against guys who went on to win the world cup.
  13. should have been out there yesterday...got our butts kicked most of the day on winds that were clearly more than forecast. never let up. we could not fish effectively in the wind and anchoring did not help. we're not making that run again, and are heading down the jersey shore next trip for sea bass, which you can keep at a reasonable size there.
  14. well you aren't going to get rid of stupid people...as we used to say in the mental health field, people have a right to be stupid.....so with that out of the way, what other steps should be taken.....
  15. with that northeast wind blowing you don't want to be on the beach.
  16. two yamaha 115s, 25 foot 1986 whaler, my friend is the original owner...built to last. we've been beating ourselves up for 40 years....we had enough gas and plenty to spare. we did bring an extra ten gallons in case we had to run to the stacks, that's where all the fish are, but that's getting far for us. but we go far down the jersey shore too; there are no fish left in raritan bay just the fall striper run. so we often have to go to the shrewsbury rocks or the mud buoy or the donut, where the old ambrose tower was. needless to say, the marine forecasts can really mess you up when the get it wrong; and they often don't mention big swells from offshore storms, which can make you sick in a hurry. we also will fish coney island and the rockaways if the fish are there.
  17. yeah we really thought we had wasted the day until around 1 pm, when it laid down. i mean, ya gotta admit that was a long boat ride. raritan river to the arthur kill, kill van kull, ny harbor, east river through hell gate, and into the sound...and we still had to go a little distance in the sound as well. but it was still better than sitting at the gw bridge for 3 hours....or getting stuck on the cross bronx.
  18. took a ride by boat from sayreville nj friday to the western sound....was fishing by some lighthouse east of new rochelle....wind was snotty in the morning and not what we expected, but it laid down by afternoon. wound up with about 25 keeper porgies, not great but not bad, given the early winds. left the dock in nj at 6 am didn't get back til 9 pm due to the late bite; we left the sound at around 6 pm. had to go slow in the dying light through the east river and harbor. water felt a bit cold to me but it could have been the east wind cooling the surface....
  19. you never know; i went out on the sound porgy fishing last year in early oct or so and just threw some ice in a bucket; it got so hot by noon the ice melted and i had to scramble lest the fish spoil; had to empty out the food cooler and toss the fish in the remaining ice; as it was a soft cooler, ice is a no no and it leaked out all the way home, which was a 3 hour ride back to nj....
  20. the tragedy of chernobyl is still ongoing and will continue after we are gone. it is hardly the past.
