I think he's getting excited about the warm water NE of Hawaii, but the Pacific Ocean current doesn't really work like that.. there are different flows in the Gulf of Alaska and east of Japan/north of hawaii where the warm water is.. It doesn't really trend to a new area, it's a uniform circulation that would have to change the whole thing to have that majical +PDO

Hey John, Though this is very sad to hear, we thank you for taking the time to let us know. May your father rest in peace. Hopefully he’s now in a better place and that that hope gives you comfort during this difficult time. He was an extremely proud father for what you stood for as a NC Rep. His mainly clean, witty jokes made many of us laugh. He’ll be long remembered by many here for those and his love of following the weather among other things. He was til only very recently still moderating, a position he took seriously til the very end. For example, we could always depend on him as needed to pin a new thread and unpin an old one in a timely fashion. John Burns Hello everyone. I am writing with sad news. My father, John Burns, who you know as your moderator jburns, passed away on Monday at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer that returned after he beat lymphoma in 2020. AmericanWX was really important to him, and I know he considered many of you to be friends. He became highly involved on this site after he suffered a heart attack about 15 years ago, and this became a key outlet for him and his love and impressive amateur knowledge of meteorology. Whenever there was going to be a storm in North Carolina, I had two sources to check: WRAL and my Dad. I remember him texting me before an ice storm was expected to hit Raleigh. No "hello," no "how are you." Just: "get a damn generator." He was absolutely never happier than when a snowstorm actually hit. He was known to drive hundreds of miles just to get into a blizzard. I remember last year's Perseids was spectacular as the moon wasn't an issue, but you're right that it's annoying that the full moon often messes up meteor showers. Too bad it's gonna be a big problem for this year's Perseids. But as I mentioned, the moon isn't going to be much of an issue for the Geminids in December. The Perseids and Geminids are the 2 big meteor showers, so at least one of them will be spectacular as long as clouds aren't a problem for the December shower.

I think it was 86 for a high but felt hotter. Even with low dewpoint. My car said 90 after i got rolling, too. Maybe have a head cold which makes my eyes wince when i go outside, though.

Severe thunderstorms developed ahead of a slow moving cold front Sunday. One storm developed west of the Lakes Region, strengthening as it approached Danbury and Franklin, NH. The storm collapsed near Sanbornton, producing a powerful wet microburst. Observed wind damage in some pockets was consistent with estimated wind speeds of 105 mph, resulting in over 500 downed trees in the area. .Wet Microburst Wind Damage... Peak Wind (estimated): 105 mph Path Length /statute/: 2 miles Path Width /maximum/: .5 miles Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/20/25 Start Time: 504pm EDT Start Location: Sanbornton, NH Start Lat/Lon: 43.5023 / -71.5852 End Date: 07/20/25 End Time: 510pm EDT End Location: Sanbornton, NH End Lat/Lon: 49.4910 / -71.5502 Significant tree damage was located in Sanbornton, NH that was consistent with a wet microburst. Numerous eye witnesses expressed that the strongest winds occurred with the heaviest downpour. Damage was variable in the downburst area with a general southeast fall direction to the trees being observed. There where two distinct pockets of damage that took hundreds of trees down, to include pine, oak and maple. Trees where both uprooted and snapped. In addition, hundreds of other trees where downed on the edges of the damage area, but damage was more sporadic in nature. Some structral damage did occur, but was mostly confined to sheds and shelter structures. A few vehicles were also damaged due to trees falling on them. Additional damage was likely further in the woods, but was not accessible for the damage survey. An estimated 500 trees were either snapped or blown down in the damage area.

That’s where my sister lives. My favorite area in the Alps. Sud Tyrol (Alto Adige) is a bit more upscale but there’s something more authentic about the Aosta Valley - and I love the stone and wood architecture. So scenic. Every year that we go back we lean more and more towards the Alps and less toward the coast. The Italian coastline is gorgeous but sooooo crowded it’s become unpleasant unless you go off season.

Sounds glorious! We’ve been there almost every weekend this summer hosting friends/family. Back this weekend and of course unsettled on Saturday/Sunday after sunny during the week. This past Saturday actually turned out nice after overcast/showers in the morning.
