E PA/NJ/DE Spring 2026 Obs/Discussion

Gorgeous day out there! Sun is shining, birds are chirping and stuff is dripping. Where is everyone?? -
there's a newer variety they don't eat green giant...but the traditional ones they feast on in the winter
-
-
So I planted deer proof evergreens that they never eat. They ate them over the last week. So much for that. Beyond that, stick a fork in this month (unbelievable) and likely this winter. Spring is in the air, you can feel it on the sunny days. Disappointing end to what could have been
-
If that first low can help set the stage for the subsequent systems I'd sacrifice that being more of a mix or even rain.
-
The deviant in me would love to see this parked on MVY ... just plunk it there and go ahead and call the National Guard
-
Canadian is rain with the first overruning low, but definitely colder and snowier for the second one. Seems like the biggest issue we face is the first low. At least as of now.
-
Is the 23-26th one of those climate snow holes ?
-
Got lots of Arborvitae shrubs in my neighborhood that have offered a good supply of food this winter. Many have been totally eaten and will never come back. Not sure why people plant those shrubs in particular with the deer population being what it is. It is like fine dining to them.

February 2026 OBS & Discussion
Freezing Drizzle replied to Stormlover74's topic in New York City Metro
Desperate, deer will nibble on just about any foliage, including tender tips of branches. The weaker deer die off. When I was a kid, while driving to Pennsylvania to visit relatives, we'd say, "Ooh, look, deer!" We don't say that anymore. They live in the marshes and woods in parts of Woodbridge, Edison, and Sayreville Townships. Some wander into the outskirts of Perth Amboy. My cousin near Lebanon, NJ has so much deer scat on his back lawn that it's almost unusable for activities. -
Yeah that's a cold look. Hoping next week delivers!
-
I'm also still willing to entertain more ice involved between that and the short order cook round two.
-
Dedicated AmWx winter retreat house? That’s what I’m hearing
-
yeah.. not a 'major' event per se, but that is a significant wholesale correction S with this 12z GFS solution toward the end of week compared to prior runs.
-
Pretty crazy how we punt entire months now like its fairly normal. Feb snow 0.0. Just another MA winter!
-
Coming around is it -
-
It was like that every winter growing up. Always cold. Always snowy. (wakes from his dream)
-
Our town was out for a bit
-
Big boy Scooter high in Quebec for the late week system....if we can get enough dPVA to curl into that monster, we'd have a nice high-QPF SWFE.....but if you keep things too sheared, might be kind of weak. GFS was attenuating quickly...so it starts off decent and weakens....but having a little crunched isn't the worst thing a week out.

Yeah a couple of gradient events. I’m running out of places to put it.

March 2018 temps 1-15 were 5.1° AN and 36.4" snow fell. Rest of the month was 4.0° BN (and 3° colder than 1-15) but had only 0.7" snow. 1917-18 included NYC's coldest week. Dec 29-Jan 4 temp avg was 9.3/-44 - that's 32.7 BN. 12/30 had 2/-13, 41 BN. (Dec 1917 and Jan 1918 are NYC's coldest for each month since records began in 1869.)
-
GFS pretty snowy next week. Looks a lot like Euro right now.
-
I can only speak locally for the Triad. But I don’t recall a winter this century with so many low temperatures below 15 and bottoming out at 3°.
-
Transitions from Nina to Nino usually good in the severe department too
