  1. Past hour
  2. this is a pretty wild change near Japan since August. that heatwave is almost entirely wiped out... wondering if this is a change to a +PDO down the road, especially if we get a Nino next year
  3. Do you scoop the meat out and eat it or more like an apple?
  4. Grading my peak season forecast. Missed Melissa by 11 hours.
  5. Melissa has now surpassed Humberto as the strongest hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season and has the second lowest minimum pressure in the basin since 2016, right behind Milton.
  6. Did you plant it in ground or container? It also looked like it took some time to set fruit.
  7. Wind is a big deal but most people that die in hurricanes is from surge/flooding, not wind.
  8. Depends on the location. Jamaica has mostly block structures, which is helpful, but how are the roofs going to fare if this does land as a Cat 4+? The wind will be very damaging to housing and infrastructure. The HAFS make me worry about Montego Bay on the NW side.
  9. In some parts of the world people call papaya “pawpaws” so yeah…there can be some confusion. But we have our own pawpaw.
  10. I was looking at the 2nd half record lows for October at CON…low to mid teens. Those temps feel like an eternity away.
  11. I just looked it up, Looks like the names get confused some.
  12. 2:00 PM EDT Mon Oct 27 Location: 16.5°N 78.3°W Moving: WNW at 3 mph Min pressure: 906 mb Max sustained: 175 mph
  13. Pawpaws…not papaya. They can handle -20s fine.
  14. Pawpaw/asimina triloba I have about 40 different tree cultivars in the yard and another hundred seedlings growing in pots. They’re North America’s largest native fruit. They’re tropical in origin, but evolved to handle cold winters. There’s still a lot of tropical characteristics to the trees and fruit. They’re sort of their own taste, but some have hints of custardy banana, vanilla, melon, mango, or even coconut. There’s quite a few people growing them in New England now. Next season I’ll try to post some of the CT/MA/RI growers if anyone wants to try some.
  15. Burned first fire Friday evening. Was so pleasant, did it again yesterday. The trees still have most of their leaves, and our house is not getting the significant solar gain we get in winter. Makes a noticeable difference in comfort on sunny days, (especially at our age). Frost on many neighborhood roofs again this morning, but still no freeze this season.
  16. Bad tracks not just for the population but those both hit resort areas hard. Most of them are on the western 1/4 of the island so thats a loss of a big portion of their economy for this winter probably
  17. 2.3in of rain so far here. Give it a month or two and it will be SNOW. 18 wooly worms and counting in the last week on the porch
  18. Wind is always the least worry in a landfalling hurricane. Storm surge and flooding are top concerns here.
  19. 12Z HAFS-A keeps Melissa basically steady state until a 907mb 16z landfall just west of Treasure Beach. HAFS-B has 901 mb landfall a bit tad further west about 13z
  20. I'm in zone 5b here so don't think they would fair well permanently outside.
