donsutherland1
With yesterday's 91° high, 2026 has become only the fifth year on record for Central Park with highs of 90° or above in April, May, June, July, and August. The other years are 1896, 1962, 1991, and 2010. It is the only year that also included a high of 80° or above in March followed by the 90s in April through August. Records go back to 1869.

UPDATE -SLIGHT RISK NOW AND EXPANDED - MAP JUST UPDATED ! Interesting that they have the yellow this far east, because the models are showing very little activity for New Jersey today. Unlike yesterday when it was widespread, anything today would be very isolated. I'm having a cookout today and hoping it stays dry. I've loved all the storms in recent weeks, but we've had enough and can use a drying out period.

Droughts normally happen in the summer and sometimes the fall and really aren't anything to be alarmed about. During the 90s I used to water for about 4 hours every other day after I got home from work and found it quite enjoyable and relaxing. Sometimes I just turned the water on and went inside and enjoyed watching the rainbows created by it. Summer is the time to be outside when most people dont want rain unless it's in brief 20 to 30 minute spurts with sunshine 90 percent of the time. We have the other 3 seasons to have rain and cloudy weather lol. I look at 1983 as an example of the kind of year that had everything and would probably make most people happy: a 20 inch snowstorm in February, another snow event in April, a hot and dry record setting summer with 100 in July and August and a 99 in September and then back to heavy rain for the Fall. A year with 80 inches of rain but no more than 2 inches in any of the summer months. The reason why summers are supposed to be dry is because we get the vast majority of our rainfall from coastal storms which dont happen in the summer or aren't supposrd to happen anyway (and neither are cutoffs). The abnormal and excessive rainfall we've had recently has polluted our reservoirs so we're getting water restrictions here from too much rainfall. That's in addition to toxic algae blooms caused by farm fertilizer and pesticide run off so people and pets can't go near the water at all. But this is a result of an extreme and historic el Nino and by next summer I'm pretty sure we'll be back to hot and dry in the summer like what's happened in the past when a strong el Nino ends-- 1966, 1983, 1999, 2010, etc. In June, many people here were talking about how they had never seen lawns burn out so early. It looked terrible with all the brown grass during the severe drought. I understand your point about too much rain, but we want enough to keep things looking green. As a vegetable gardener, it's always frustrating to me when we don't get enough rain during the spring and summer. You can water all you want and that does keep the plants going, but it's not the same as rain water. I always notice in the spring that the plants in the vegetable garden have a big growth spurt after a good rainfall. That doesn't happen from just watering with the hose during dry periods. As I mentioned, I lost some of the first tomatoes to sunscald in early July due to the combination of extreme heat and extremely dry conditions. Thankfully things turned around over the last month with plenty of rainfall. The vegetable garden is doing great now. Obviously you and I will never agree on this subject, lol. NEG NAO
as the storms over southeast PA keep moving east - northeast they are starting to become severe and there are other fast pop ups developing further north towards Allentown

I'm not having the cookout until 6pm and I think any activity will be gone by then, but we'll see.
