January 25-26 Winter Storm Potential

Starting to hear some louder “flakes” hit the windows here just south of Blue Mountain Ski Resort. Some larger flakes mixing in with the pixie dust as well.

Think we may end up in a battle zone here. Correlation Coefficient showing the mix line starting to crash south in central PA again.

I just noticed the same about the mix line out west. Let's see how far east it can come. Crank coastal, crank!

I don’t know how anyone reliably measures sleet but looks like over 0.5” to me. It’s been pretty heavy at times. Sleet and snow total ~8 so far

All sleet now. Just cleared the driveway and sidewalk. Wow is it powdery! Temp is creeping up as well, 10.4°F.

Got the first few pings here in Douglassville a little before 12:30 and it's pretty much all sleet now.  I haven't measured, but we got a substantial thump before the changeover.

75% sleet with some flakes, then 25% sleet and mostly snow and reverted back to sleet. I wonder if the LV is the battleground for the mixline.

It's been sleeting here for at least an hour in Pine Valley (NE Phila, close to Huntington Valley). It's really coming down hard. We had about 6 inches before the snow began.

Changed to sleet in Allentown. Right on schedule with all the NAM runs from the past couple days. The line does appear to be crashing southeast in central PA…we’ll see if that makes it here and changes us back to snow at some point.

GFS did such a great job with this one. Never showed the 18-24" solutions and did a better job with timing. Long live the king. Taking my 5-10" call victory lap that I locked in on Friday GG boys

HRRR has sleet here til 7 pm before the flip to rain.  A couple hours later for EPA, but without the rain.  NAM is similar, but with a flip to ZR at the end.

Its crashing back down east very quickly. That could be our golden goose.

Good point the ECM stopped it's north advance near Allentown anything is possible

Sleet definitely mixing in here with the snow.  Haven't taken any measurements.  Table on back deck looks like about 12" but I am pretty sure some of that is from blowing snow from our gazebo.  This was taken about an hour ago.

Also, I got my snow to liquid ratio for the snow that fell through about 9:00 am when we had about 3.6" of snow - it was 14:1. I thought it would be at least 15:1, so off on that guess a little bit, probably because the flakes the first few hours were not large dendrites, so even though they were smaller dendrites and very dry, they packed in more than expected. Did this by taking a 6" x 6" x 3.6" cube of snow and melting it and doing the volume ratio.

 

As of 12 pm, we had 7.0" of snow and it was snowing very heavily at 14F.  I then shoveled for the next hour and around 12:40 or so, some sleet mixed in, but it wasn't "classic" spherical pellets, it looked more like small rods that might've actually been poorly formed flakes - weird stuff.  

Anyway, finished my 2nd shoveling (denser) around 1 pm and we now have about 8.3", but it's getting harder to tell as the winds have picked up considerably, blowing/drifting the snow, so I had to average a bunch of measurements (luckily there's old crusty snow underneath, so not measuring on the board isn't an issue like it is on grass).  Made a nice snow angel.  Definitely a mix of snow and sleet and it keeps oscillating on which one dominates.  And if you want to see downtown Metuchen, News12 is doing a remote from there.

Interestingly enough, pouring sleet here and temp back down to 10F from 12F.

Have been puking sleet the past half hour, where the earlier mixing was there about 10 minutes ago and is now pure sleet, with some blowing snow mixing in from roof tops.

Temp is up to 15 and dp 12.

Hey BBasile, do you think it will be freezing rain? or temps go above freezing? Currently 16.1F on my last reading.
