MikeB_01
and just like that, the snow has shut off for me. I am going to get out here and do one final measure. Whether its over 12 or not, this was one hell of a fun storm to track. Well done, everyone. 1

A minor thing since the majority of us did still get there but is what it is. I get it, and me too - because it memorializes the storm a little better. And that makes sense because you are talking about storms and not snow that has to happen within a calendar day. But him making it sound it’s some 30 year streak is silly, just because snow on certain other storms fell over two calendar days.

Ahoff
Really nice to have a storm that didn't flood the area with warm air and turn us to straight rain. That was a huge win. Thank God for that deep arctic air. 4 1

I'm with you, I mean we all rate an event based on our own sometimes relative metrics, but a 12in storm is a 12in storm no matter what hours it falls. Personally idgaf about official measurements either. I really only care what falls in my yard. Don't get me wrong, a big region wide storm like this one is way more enjoyable, but say the official site got 12 today and I got freezing rain? How does that official measurement do anything to satisfy my desire to see it snow? Heck, I'd trade a few inches less for cold before and after a storm. This event checked all the boxes for me so nothings going to bring me down on it that's for sure. I had a blast tracking it with everyone, and the excitement when it started moving NW and really hammering us is priceless. 4

TimB
First off, this was a deeply satisfying storm and I got just a hair over a foot imby, and it sounds like many of us did. It seems the official obs is consistent with a lot of the other obs in the western part of the county, so I don’t think I have an issue with the measurement itself. I’ll agree that the calendar day thing is a bit silly, so let’s go by individual storms instead. Pittsburgh has had 27 two-day official storm totals of 12”+, most recently, of course, in 2010. The 16 years (and now still counting) that have passed since our last one is still the longest drought by that metric. With that being said, it’s only January 25 and we’re only about 8” away from getting our first above normal snow season since 2021-22, and that one was only because we lucked into above normal with some late season stuff. We’ve had two winter months with below normal temperatures and above normal snowfall. Winter has finally wintered again, and it’s been fantastic so far. Let’s bring the rest of this one home! 2

Rd9108
Great storm. May not go down as one of the biggest but most fell during the daylight, most of us stayed all snow, models did a pretty good job on everything, and some areas got 12+. Plus its gonna stick around for awhile and with the deep cold if we get a clipper/snow shower it can freshen up the snow pack.
southpark
Our low temps are going to be brutally cold this week too. Talking about possible -25 wind chills tomorrow night into Tuesday. There are going to be a lot of school cancellations/remote days this week.

I do agree - just thought you were trolling a bit on the calendar day stuff. But moving past that… You aren’t wrong for tracking that. I like to see high official measurements too because it helps storms be remembered. But even though the past few winters sucked, I actually think we are in a decent “significant storm” period over the past several years: 3.2018, 12.2020 and today were all storms where the general area had a foot-type storm in a lot of places. And today had a lot of spots had considerably more. You shift totals 25 miles south today we are flirting with a top 10 storm. So the actual weather for those types of storms hasn’t been too bad versus what you may expect per climo - it’s just been a little unlucky with the official measurement. north pgh
I’m off to bed because I have to work at 4:00 am. I shoveled 4 times and salted so I should be able to make it up the driveway. The snow plow just cleaned my road. It was fun tracking all week and it payed off with at least a foot at my house. Thank you all and we still have plenty of winter for more. And kudos for our detour sign which finally came through for us.
RitualOfTheTrout
Well, I've got more shoveling to do tomorrow. My road is impassible still. Adrenaline is wearing off and maybe ready to go to bed... So who's staying up for 00z runs for what's next!? (Kidding, I think)

Gordo74
Storm final for me: 14” measure on the ground, 16” via snowboard measurement. Looks like about 2” of compaction. I’ll put this one in my personal hall of fame given it was incredible to watch in daylight all day and it being the first big snow (10”+) for my kids. Haven’t felt a snow this big/impactful since the 2010 storm and that was nearly half a life ago for me, so I’m taking the W where I can.
