Toms River - West of GSP

32F (down from 34 earlier)

Mod Snow

W NE 12mph

P 30.00F

Overnight was 2" of mix - then when precip got cranked up snowline pushed off the coast - waiting for the creep back westward, some real heavy stuff coming out SNJ heading toward me this morning looks to be all snow...

Those echoes near 50 dbz are not snow.  Mix line stretches from Island Beach State Park to just south of the Delaware Memorial Bridge right now.

Gotcha - thanks... using a combination of vendor weather maps and base reflective radar (all I have at the moment) to determine mix line vs. precip rate etc... Those reds creeping up and increased snow and wind here made me think... So that's dangerous ;-) OK back to reading and observing...

Statement as of 5:51 AM EST on February 13, 2014

..a dangerous band of heavy accumulating snow working through the
Philadelphia metropolitan area...

the band of heavy snow extended from Philadelphia east through Ocean
County. Snowfall rates of around three to four inches per hour has
occurred in this band. The band was moving northeast at 20 mph and
affect the northern Philadelphia suburbs and central New Jersey
between now and 8 am.

The snow will rapidly drop visibilities to near zero. Travel is not
recommended at all. The likelihood of becoming trapped on roadways is
high. If you absolutely must travel, please make sure you have
blankets, a cell phone and a means of keeping yourself warm.

Center City: 28.6F. Just in the past 15 minutes we've transitioned over to much larger flakes -- I guess that's a sign the atmosphere is warming? Big, wet, pasty flakes coming down now. I'd estimate about 6" on the ground, but that's not an official estimate because I haven't been outside.

I do hope PHL gets to 6"!

OBS

SN

Temp 28.0F

Winds howling out of the NE

Vis is 1 mile so not quite SN+ up here at the moment.  Was pouring snow earlier.  Hoping the power holds because it still looks like a disaster area around here with the trees and branches that came down last week that are buried in snow and ice. :axe:

Edit to note what previous posters mentioned - the temp rise.  Earlier this morning, the temp was about 24F, so there was a definite warming over the past hour.

Whoa that map seems pretty bullish in my area (14-18").

Haven't gone out to measure yet, but seems as though we have about 5"

Heaviest snow the past hour and a half in Lionville

One thing about these maps (which I personally don't like, but I don't program them) is that they are actually based on single number input.  I.e., if it gets even slightly above 14, it spits out a 14-18 range.  So, really they are forecasting probably 14 or 15, but the map is programmed to do certain ranges.
