I was just going to post that, some serious rates down there. Mostly light to occasionally moderate on western Li

Yeah I just got soaked picking plants for a landscape project. My client insisted on doing it today. Based on radar we should approach an inch through out most of the metro

The Wantagh meso 107 is a extreme example of what a dry west wind can do on the south shore. That station is less then a mile from the bay. I think allot of it has to due with air exiting the urban heat island of the city and continuing through the most developed part of the island. I was life guarding at jones beach that day and we had several heat exhaustion incidents. On the sand it can be even hotter.

The March 2010 high wind event produced the strongest widespread winds on the island since the December 92 nor’easter. Frequent gusts to hurricane fource. Ground saturation definitely played a role in the severity of the tree damage. Another factor was the length of time without a similar wind event so trees had allot of time to grow. A gas station canopy blew over on Wantagh Ave and merrick road right by my parents house. That even really changed the landscape of the south shore with so many mature trees uprooted. Then Irene and Sandy finished off the job. It’s amazing to me that we haven’t seen more high wind events since (other then Issiais)

I missed that one, I was working in New Hyde Park at the time but wasn’t at work. I have only seen pea sized hail twice on the island. I have seen quarter size in central Jersey and the golf ball storm in Texas. Gorilla hail is on my weather bucket list.
-
Yeah seems very early for that type of heat. That’s the exact reason I could never live in Texas. It’s only going to get worse, it’s almost like winter here in that you don’t go outside much when the HI is 110+. The thunderstorms in Texas are amazing though. Best thunderstorm I have ever experienced was a true super cell in Dallas. Golf ball size hail and other level lighting.

The Black Hills have some serious elevation and have had some crazy late season dumps.
-
There is some truth to that. If you look back at periods that had similar CO2 levels and resultant temps 5c warmer then current. The poles were warm enough to support forrests. Warming is much more pronounced closer to the poles.

These over the top heatwaves seem to be increasing as everything heads north. Our summer climate more mirrors the coastal Carolinas. And Montreal the old NYC.
-
Yeah the rest of the week looks like crap. Hopefully we can salvage at least some of Memorial Day weekend but the pattern isn’t conducive for beach weather either way.

Yeah I had me feet in and it stung. If I’m surfing it’s still full suit boots and gloves. Some of those kids are drunk/high. Allot of high schools choose jones beach for senior cut day due to the lack of rule enforcement. I mean, for mine back in 00 we burried a keg in ice the night before. Had the tap sticking out of a hole cut in a beach blanket. Ahhh the good old days.
-
Just took a nice 6 mile walk right on the ocean at Jones Beach. Senior cut day with kids running in and out of the water. Gorgeous beach day if you don’t mind a little bite in the east wind.

Ok so maybe the Ap thing was a bad example. Where it does matter is in declaring official heat waves. Opening cooling centers for poor elderly and the homeless.

Lee Goldberg has mentioned the Park not being representative. But it’s still the go to for apps, which is where like 90% of people get their weather info now.
-
The issue gets worse and worse. Wait until the first heatwave and it’s 92+ at every station but 89 at the Park and the media reports 89. It’s a big pet peeve of mine because it’s not the reality of the experience of the everyday person.

If MJO812 comes with I’ll bring the tools and do the trimming!!!!

Again Central Park isn’t like other parks in the city. It’s, its own entity run by the most powerful people on earth. They could care less about the NWS.
-
The exact reasons I listed above. The global elite running a corrupt organization. They treat the park like their own backyard. The large enclosure for the instruments with fencing is unsightly. So deep in the trees is exactly where they want it, and exactly where it will stay.
-
It’s very difficult to cut anything in Central Park. It’s not run by the Parks Department like other NYC Parks. It’s run by the Central Park Conservatory. They receive millions upon millions of dollars in donations from some of the richest people in the world, so it’s not a money issue. I have a good friend who I worked with at Columbia/Barnard who was a gardener at cpk and said it’s incredibly corrupt. As far as the heatwave potential. Just look at the heat waves in the Pacific Northwest and France over the last few years. Major heat domes that crushed all time records by as much as 10 degrees. The 1953 heat wave was caused by a heat dome. If that same heat wave were to happen today the highest temp would likely be 105+.
-
Yep, lots of rain recently. The issue just gets worse and worse every year as the instruments get further buried in foliage.
-
We have been due for a crappy Memorial Day weekend. Looking more likely now.

My parents house in south wantagh had no AC except in my parents bedroom. So my sis and I would sleep on the floor in there during especially hot nights. The rest of the house was so hot it was probably dangerous. Since we were only a few blocks from the bay those nights were rare expect that summer.
-
It’s the predominant wind direction. Which has been has had less west in it the last few years. That’s why NJ has been hotter. I have a feeling we see more west wind this summer, like today and this winter. That wind direction really bakes the south shore.

Was, empire wind is currently on hold indefinitely. I’m not getting into politics in here but you know…
