This causes a cooling of the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s surface in turn cools the air just above it. This process is most intense when there are clear skies and light wind. The diagram below shows characteristics of the radiational cooling inversion. The inversion layer is shallow and the temperature warms rapidly with height above the ground surface. These situations can cause low temperatures to be colder than expected at the surface. It can also result in a very rapid warm up when the sun comes up since, along with the solar warming, the convective turbulence will pick up causing the much warmer air aloft to mix out the shallow cold air at the surface.

The EPS and GEFS both agree on our next 100° potential in early August as a 594dm+ heat dome builds near the region. This is the kind of pattern where the OP models have a windshield wiper effect from 12z to 0z. One of the runs is always warmer but the ensemble mean holds steady with the strong heat signal.

The actual GFS forecast had low 80s for Manhattan today. Those weatherbell charts are always off. So it’s a quality control issue in the way they generate their model forecast charts.

The bottom line is that the tree growth since the 1990s has probably cost NYC at least 13 days a year reaching 90°. This is by the more conservative Newark figures. Faster warming along the lines of LGA would yield more than that number. This may have tied the 2nd longest heatwave on record in New Jersey at 14 days for Hillsborough-Duke. The heatwave included 4 days in the 100° to 102° range there. This may be the first time that our area had multiple days of 100° heat with a trough over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. The 10 event 100° day composite from 2010 to 2021 featured a strong ridge over the Northeast instead. The tree growth covering the Central Park ASOS has made its highest temperatures closer to Suffolk County than the rest of our urbanized areas since 2013. Central Park hasn’t reached 99° since the 2013 summer. Islip has come closer to 100 than NYC over these years. The list below is our highest summer temperatures since 2013. We had a mix of days this heatwave with lighter and stronger winds. But NYC temperatures were in line with the South Shore sea breeze sites from JFK to ISP. So the high temperature cool bias has been pretty consistent across multiple patterns. I can still remember the old heatwaves like July 1977 when Central Park was one of the warmest sites. We can clearly identify the mid 1990s into the early 2000s as the period when the trees began to cover the Central Park equipment. From the 1950s through the early 1990s, NYC would record 90 degree days in reasonable agreement with either EWR or LGA. Then NYC fell far behind during the 2000s when tree growth caused the high temperature readings to become unreliable. I added the NJ July highest temperatures below since 2010. Newark and Harrison are often close on the max like the 102° this July so far. One of those stations is usually the NJ leader. New Brunswick is usually several degrees cooler since it’s more of a suburban setting than Newark and Harrison. Much of the July variance from year to year in NJ is probably the result of differing prevailing wind patterns. The Newark site is right near the bay. So active bay breeze years like 2021 will allow Newark to run cooler than surrounding sites. The 2010 Newark disparity is a result of the thermometer malfunction at around 12:30 causing the station to miss the local highs of 106-107 a few hours later.
